As an occasional solo parent, I know here in Darwin, solo parenting is part of life for many families.

Defence deployments, FIFO work, travel and long rosters mean many mums regularly carry the full load at home.

Preparation doesn’t remove the challenge — but it can soften the edges.

Save this for the next time you’re heading into a solo stretch, or share it with a mum who is.

And if you know someone currently doing it alone for a while, a small check-in can go a long way.

International Women’s Day reminds us that progress for women doesn’t happen in isolation — it happens through community, support and shared responsibility.

This year’s theme highlights a simple truth: when we invest in women, everyone benefits.

At The Mother Hood, we see this every day.
When mothers are supported, families thrive.
When women are held in community, they have space to grow, heal and lead.

Today we celebrate women everywhere — and especially the mothers whose labour, care and resilience shape the world in quiet but powerful ways.

Here’s to building villages where women don’t have to do it all alone.

Not all motherhood experiences are equal — and sleep is one of the biggest dividers.

If you’re parenting a baby or child who doesn’t sleep well, your days and nights look different. Your capacity looks different. Your support needs look different.

This isn’t about whose baby is “harder.”
It’s about acknowledging that chronic sleep disruption reshapes a mother’s body, mind and life.

If this is you, we see you.
And if this isn’t your experience, let this be an invitation to extend deeper understanding to the mums who are running on very little.

I’m not sure if it was just me who experienced this over the Christmas period, but the amount of people - strangers included! - who felt the urge to question when and how I was parenting my child was a bit much.

As mums, we don’t need that pressure. Not from well meaning family members, not strangers, and certainly not health care providers. You know your child best. You know your family and your family’s needs best.

Parent your child/ren in the timeframe that meets the needs of your child, your family and your circumstances.

Time to start clearing out those wardrobes! It’s time for our wet season Mum & Bubs Clothing Swap!

For the season you’re in — and the ones you’ve outgrown.

Join us and come together to swap, share, and connect — all in the spirit of sustainability and community. Whether it’s maternity wear you no longer need, breastfeeding clothes waiting for a new home, or baby, toddler and kids clothing and toys that no longer serve your little ones — bring what you can and take what you need.

This isn’t just about clothes — it’s about choosing connection over consumption, and community over clutter.

It’s for mums who are reducing their impact, and finding joy in reusing and repurposing.

It’s a invitation to share stories, swap goods, and support each other in the ever-changing seasons of motherhood.
How it works:
* Bring gently loved items (clothing, toys, maternity, baby & kids gear)
* Lay them out on our community swap tables
* Browse what others have brought and take what you need — no money exchanged, just kindness and care
* Stay for a cuppa, a chat, and some soul-nourishing connection

Let’s create a beautiful cycle of giving, sharing and reimagining what motherhood can look like — together.

Join us at the Mother Hood Darwin, bring what you can to share with the community, whether this be mums clothes, kids and baby clothes, or toys

Wet season washing in Darwin hits differently, and there’s been a bit of rain around lately! The rain is constant, the air is thick, and suddenly everything smells damp no matter how “clean” it is.

There are weeks where the sun disappears and the laundry pile won’t cooperate.

Try some of our low-tox, low-stress, real solutions for Darwin mums doing their best in humidity you can feel!

As we look ahead, we want to pause and acknowledge what has already been built — a space shaped by mums, held by community, and grounded in care.

To those who have walked alongside us, shared our work, attended events, hired rooms, or quietly supported from afar — thank you.

And to those who are new here — welcome.

The year ahead is about deepening connection, strengthening our village, and continuing to centre mothers and families in the ways they deserve.

We’re grateful to be doing this with you ♥️✨
