Reiki is a spiritual practice developed by Mr Usui in the late nineteenth century.

Incorporating influences from Japanese Buddhism, Shinto and Shugendo, this system was created specifically to be free from association with any particular religion and made available to those seeking spiritual growth and enlightenment.

One of the truly beautiful outcomes of this practice is the facility to channel healing for self and others.

Today, Reiki is mainly known for healing, but, in fact, this is only one aspect of Usui Reiki Ryhoyo.

The thing I love about Reiki is its simplicity.

It is very easy to learn and do.

But don't let the surface simplicity fool you. Reiki is a powerful spiritual practice that gently opens the pathway to inner exploration.

When followed consistently with humbleness, compassion, patience and diligence leads to satori.

So simple.

So easy.

Insomnia makes a hard day even harder.

You may be tempted pull the covers over your head, stay in bed and not even bother with the day ahead.

But life doesn’t work that way, does it? Particularly when there’s work to be done.

Assess the symptoms of your insomnia hangover. The main culprits are likely to be:

😡 Grumpiness and zero tolerance for just about everything, or depression, or both!
😩 Mind-numbing exhaustion.
😣 Resentment that you have to somehow function today.
😬 Higher levels of pain and inflammation.
😕 Zero motivation.
😵‍💫 Cravings for caffeine and carbs.

Whatever your reality is today, acknowledge it, and recognise that it’s just for today. Go with the flow and let go of the need to be perfect.

Here are my top 5 tips to manage your insomnia hang-over.

1️⃣ Be kind yourself
Because running on a sleep deficit does turn you into a different person. That’s OK. It’s just for today. Honour this and the abilities of the person you are today.

2️⃣ Boost your mood
Lack of sleep has you in a low vibe setting before you even get out of bed. Quick wins to raise your frequency come from laughing, singing, dancing and music. Love your funny cat videos? This is the perfect occasion for a little indulgence.

3️⃣ Fuel your body
Make conscious choices about what you eat and drink. Avoid too much caffeine and those wicked comfort foods. Choose light nutritious food instead: fresh fruit and veg, in small meals throughout the day. Add some good protein to your breakfast and lunch for sustained energy release.

4️⃣ Reprioritise your day
Where possible, reschedule the big, brain intensive activities for another day. Insomnia hang-over days provide the perfect opportunity to catch up on all that filing you’ve been avoiding. If you can, switch your focus to the low-level but just as important, back-end systems tasks. You know, the ones you never quite get round to doing.

5️⃣ Stay hydrated
Water is vital to the healthy functioning of your body, from cellular metabolism, to waste removal, to enabling the synapses between your neurons to fire cleanly. Feeling groggy and unfocussed? Put the caffeine down and drink water instead.

‼️ Bonus tip: Vitamin C
The anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties of Vitamin C make this a great addition to my insomnia hang-over cure. If high levels of pain and inflammation are a part of your insomnia hangover, be sure to add extra Vitamin C to your day. It just might help you get a better sleep tonight too.

As with all things health-related, prevention is better than cure. But even the best sleep hygiene routine can get tripped up by the unexpected sleepless night (or, heaven forbid, series of nights).

What makes Reiki so good for stress?

Reiki has effects on your body that are easily observable. For instance, your breath rate slows. You transition from an alert state into deep relaxation, even sleep.

Yes, there have been quite a few snores from my table over the years. 😴

And then there’s what people report feeling afterwards: lighter, calmer, with a clearer perspective.

These observable effects correspond to a switch over in your nervous system from the sympathetic state (alert, and if you’re stressed ready to fight, freeze, flee or fawn) to the parasympathetic state.

That is, the rest-digest side of the nervous system that controls autonomic functions such as breathing, heart rate, metabolism and most importantly HEALING.

Reiki gives you real bang for your buck when you need to de-stress.

It literally moves you out of a state of stress into a state of rest.

AND it amplifies your body’s natural healing state while you’re resting in the control of the parasympathetic nervous system.

So simple.

So easy.

So effective!

What do you need from your Reiki session?

The answer to this question helps you determine the right Reiki practitioner for you because not all Reiki practitioners are the same!

Apart from the fact that there are many different Reiki styles, each practitioner also brings their own personal skills, experience and expertise.

People book sessions with me because they:
🔴 Are overwhelmed
🟠 Are in acute pain.
🟡 Feel unsupported by the medical system.
🟢 Need a safe place to be heard.
🔵 Don’t know what else to do.

By the end of a session, the most common responses I get are:

What is the secret to profound self-healing?

Disconnection from the divine is the source if pain, disease and dysfunction.

Therefore healing is a journey of reconnection with the divine; and self-healing is body-felt realisation and understanding that you are divine and that all of your answers lie within.

To get started on the this journey of reconnection, I recommend these three foundational practices.

Mindfulness

This practice cultivates the crucial skill of Observation. Becoming the Observer empowers you to see the truth of what your analytical mind tells you, and positions you to start making Conscious choices. That is, not ego- or fear-based choices.

Meditation

Meditation teaches you to open space within; to move out of the intensity of the thoughts of your persona and into a space where other wisdom can blossom. This is the state where you learn to interpret your unique understanding of the Universal wisdom that’s available to you.

Yoga (or Tai Chi or Chi Kung)

These mindful movement practices teach you the pattern of your own body and energy flow within. Surrendering to the practice is more than teaching yourself to remain present with what is, it’s an opportunity to discover what makes you tick, and what makes you stick! (Otherwise known as stuck energy.)

Mastering these foundational practices isn’t what you do in your practice, it’s how you remove the boundary between your practice and everyday living.
