Mental Illness Fellowship of Australia NT

Mental Illness Fellowship of Australia NT Friends and family members who care for people with mental illness do a remarkable job, and significantly contribute, often without thanks, to our community.

Mental Illness Fellowship of Australia NT is a not-for profit, non-government organisation, committed to supporting people living with a mental illness and their family and friends. Statistically, Carers are more likely to suffer deterioration in their own physical and mental health, due to their 24-7 devotion to the person they care for. Unfortunately, โ€œburn outโ€ for Carers is a common scenario.

Community support through planned respite, peer support groups, one-on-one support and education have all been shown to be effective services to help support Carers to continue doing what they do best. We have an Individual Recovery Program for consumers. Our aim is to increase the opportunities for recovery for people whose lives are affected by mental illness by assisting a person to identify & develop their goals & strengths, we then work alongside the person to assist them to achieve those goals & assist the participant to help them overcome social isolation and increase their connections within the community by increasing the participants personal capacity and self reliance. We also run two recreational programs for people living with a mental illness. Mi Place is a drop in and activities center, running every weekday, which provides lunch and a great sense of community. The Cool Program runs in conjunction to Mi Place and offers recreational activities Tuesdays weekly and Saturdays fortnightly.

Schizophrenia affects around 1 in 100 Australians. Every year, Schizophrenia Awareness Week asks Australians to look more closely at one of the most misunderstood conditions in mental health. This year, the national campaign theme is "Beyond the Headlines." It asks us to move past the crisis narratives and focus on what actually helps people live well.

"What does a mentally well community actually look like?"

That is the question we are asking Darwin this Schizophrenia Awareness Week, and we want your answer.

Join us at Raintree Park on Friday 22 May from 10am to 1pm for a free community event in the heart of Darwin City. There will be live music, a free BBQ sausage sizzle, information stalls from local organisations, and a community voting activity where you get to tell us what matters most to you.

See you there ๐Ÿงก

Last Friday, our Alice Springs team joined Carers NT and Mental Health Association Central Australia for a morning tea supporting carers of people living with disability and mental health challenges.

Mental health support workers from Alice Springs Hospital, the NT Friendship Group, and EqualiTEA were also there on the day.

Guests shared a meal, made new connections, and finished the morning with a creative pottery activity. The pieces will be fired and returned to them to keep. Carers also went home with a gift bag at the end of the session.

The morning was filled with laughter and connection, with carers forming new friendships and strengthening links with local support services.

Last month, families, carers, and community members came together at the Child Family Centre to learn about MiTrack, MIFANT's free early mental health support program for young people in Tennant Creek and Alice Springs.

When someone you love is struggling, knowing where to turn makes all the difference. Sessions like this one make sure the community knows that support exists, what it looks like, and how to access it.

If you are worried about a young person in your life, MiTrack is free and open to families, carers, and anyone who works with young people.

Find out more at mifant.org.au/central-australia-programs or call (08) 8948 1051.

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming Oly Carlson MLA, Assistant Minister for Health and Member for Wanguri, to MiPlace Hub.

Oly Carlson MLA took the time to hear about the work MIFANT does across the Territory, tour the space, and meet the team who show up here every single day for people living with mental illness and their families.

MiPlace is more than a mental health hub. It is a place where people belong, where the kettle is always on, and where nobody has to face a hard day alone. Having that story heard at a government level matters.

Thank you Oly Carlson MLA for making the time. We look forward to continuing the conversation.

Last week at MIFANT Tennant Creek, young people prepared fried rice and chicken together as part of the school holiday program. They organised ingredients, managed different cooking tasks, and figured things out together as they went.

Cooking together is one of those things that quietly builds so much. Independence. Routine. The confidence that comes from completing something from start to finish. And the kind of friendships that grow when you work side by side.

This is what showing up early for young people looks like.

Flour, fruit, biscuits, and a room full of smiles.

Last week in Tennant Creek, young people got hands-on in the kitchen making Filipino mango and biscuit sandwiches together. They shared tasks, followed instructions, and helped each other from start to finish.

The pride on their faces when it was done? That is what it is all about.

These school holiday sessions are about more than just keeping busy. They are about building confidence, making connections, and having a space where young people genuinely belong.

More than 10,000 Territorians are living with serious mental health challenges and not receiving support. That is not a statistic we can sit with.

MiPlace Hub exists for those people. It is a place to come for an art class, a coffee, or just somewhere that feels safe. A place to quietly rebuild, with people who genuinely care.

We are featured on the front page of NT News this week, and we could not be prouder of the community that made it happen! ๐Ÿฅฐ

Kerry Sandhu Art and our MiPlace participants were doing what they do every week: creating, connecting, and showing up for each other. That is the story worth telling.

Thank you Kerry, and thank you to everyone who makes MiPlace the place it is.
