COVID-19 UPDATE❗
The Northern Territory has recorded four new locally acquired cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours.
All cases are linked to the Newmont Corporation gold mine following a worker testing positive after an overnight stay at a Brisbane quarantine hotel.
The four new cases include two people who are currently in quarantine on the mine site, a worker who was self-isolating at home in Palmerston that is now in the Howard Springs Quarantine Facility and one worker identified as being interstate in Northern New South Wales.
The total number of COVID-19 cases diagnosed in the Northern Territory is 183.
So we can quickly contain and isolate the spread of this virus, Greater Darwin will go into a 48-hour lockdown starting at 1pm on 27 June 2021. This includes the City of Darwin, City of Palmerston and Litchfield Council Local Government Areas.
All people in Greater Darwin will be required to stay in their home or accommodation during this time. Hotel and accommodation providers will be able to stay open to support guests already onsite, people with bookings or people in need of accommodation who are already in the Greater Darwin region.
There will only be five reasons to leave home. Masks must be worn at all times when leaving home. These include:
🔹To receive health care or attend medical appointments. Including to get the COVID-19 vaccine.
🔹To undertake shopping and get necessary goods and services. Supermarkets will stay open, so there is no need to stock up on groceries.
🔹To exercise for up to one hour a day within 5km of your home and only with members of your household or one other person.
🔹To undertake essential work. If you can work from home – you must work from home.
🔹In case of an emergency or if there is family violence or to provide essential care to a loved one or dependent.
All businesses, retail outlets, hospitality venues, gyms, pools and community centres will be closed. Cafes and restaurants will be able to offer take-away and delivery services.
Although it is school holidays, schools and vacation care will be closed except for the children of essential workers. Childcare centres will open only for the children of essential workers. For a list of essential workers visit https://coronavirus.nt.gov.au/
It is an offence not to comply with CHO Directions and fines will be issued for those failing to follow lockdown directions.
A significant contact tracing effort is underway with 1641 close contacts identified. Of those, 754 people are undertaking quarantine on the mine site. A Rapid Response Team has been established and is operating from the mine to manage quarantine arrangements and infection control on the site.
