Diabetes and other metabolic conditions are increasingly common, yet in many cases they are closely linked to lifestyle choices. Factors such as poor nutrition, physical inactivity, high stress, and excess weight contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and related complications. The positive news is that these conditions are often preventable—and in some instances, even reversible—through targeted behaviour changes. Regular physical activity, such as aerobic exercise, improves cardiovascular fitness and helps lower blood sugar, while resistance training builds muscle mass, enhancing insulin sensitivity. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) can be especially effective in reducing abdominal fat and improving metabolic health. Combined with balanced nutrition, these approaches offer powerful tools for prevention and management.

CORE STABILITY: The REAL story.

I’m sure by now, we have all heard the “core stability” phrase. The fact is that the fitness industry has hijacked this term in order to further their own agenda.

Research at UQ by a certain physio in the early 1990’s changed the world’s perception of back pain forever. However, the specificity has been largely ignored in order for the fitness industry to promote their own agenda. Can your trainer explain specifically what true core stability is about?

It’s time you understood.

TRUE core stability is about 2 specific muscles. They are Transversus Abdominus and Multifidus. Dr Paul Hodges conducted some amazing research with electrode needles into all 4 abdominal muscles with amazingly statistically significant results. If your trainer has not mentioned these muscles as part of your rehab training, you are probably being mislead.

Back pain is not necessarily about “slipped discs” or other fanciful terms we have endured over the years. There is no such thing as a “Slipped Disc”. Any understanding of anatomy makes this term cringeworthy.

We, as physios, are now so more in tune with the relevant causes of back pain and how to deal with them.

Strength training isn't just for men! Building muscle offers numerous benefits beyond aesthetics, such as enhanced bone density, increased metabolism, improved posture, and reduced risk of injury.

So, how can you embark on your own strength-building journey? Here are some tips to guide you along the way:

1️⃣ Embrace progressive resistance: Gradually increase the weight or resistance you use in your workouts to continually challenge your muscles and promote growth. Whether it's lifting weights, using resistance bands, or engaging in bodyweight exercises, progression is key.

2️⃣ Focus on compound movements: Incorporate compound exercises like squats, deadlifts, lunges, bench presses, and rows into your training regimen. These movements engage multiple muscle groups simultaneously, maximising efficiency and overall strength gains.

3️⃣ Fuel your body right: Adequate nutrition is crucial for muscle growth. Consume a balanced diet that includes lean proteins, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats. Don't forget to stay hydrated and listen to your body's needs.

4️⃣ Prioritise recovery: Rest and recovery are just as important as your training sessions. Allow your muscles time to repair and grow stronger by incorporating rest days into your routine. Quality sleep, stretching, and foam rolling can also aid in recovery.

5️⃣ Seek knowledge and support: Educate yourself on proper form and technique to prevent injuries and optimise results.

Can we give you some guidance? Book a PT appointment by calling the clinic on 3425 2643.

Achilles Tendonitis and Physiotherapy

Achilles tendonitis is a common overuse injury that affects the Achilles tendon, which connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. It often develops due to repetitive stress, excessive exercise, poor footwear, or a sudden increase in activity levels. Symptoms include pain, stiffness, and swelling at the back of the heel, especially in the morning or after physical activity.

How Physiotherapy Helps

Physiotherapy is an effective treatment for Achilles tendonitis, focusing on reducing pain, improving mobility, and preventing further injury. A physiotherapist will assess your condition and create a tailored rehabilitation plan, which may include:
Rest and Load Management – Reducing high-impact activities like running while maintaining gentle movement.

Stretching and Strengthening Exercises – Eccentric heel drops, calf stretches, and resistance exercises help improve tendon flexibility and strength.
Manual Therapy – Techniques such as massage and joint mobilisation can relieve tension and improve circulation.

Soft tissue release techniques – Applying pressure to specific trigger points in the calf muscles.

Biomechanical Correction – Assessing gait and recommending orthotics or footwear modifications.

Dry Needling – this technique stimulates the area to promote healing and reduce pain.

With consistent physiotherapy, most people recover within a few months, but early intervention is key to preventing chronic issues. Call us if you have concerns on 3425 2643.

Did you know? Your Body Has a Natural Painkiller! 💪🌟

Your body has an amazing ability to help reduce pain and stress—naturally! It’s all thanks to endorphins, the body’s own "feel-good" hormones. These little guys act like natural painkillers, promoting a sense of well-being and helping you feel better, both physically and mentally. 🙌

Endorphins are released during physical activity like exercise, and even from something as simple as a good laugh! This is why exercise doesn’t just improve your fitness, but it also helps reduce discomfort from aches, pains, and even anxiety. So, the next time you’re feeling stressed or sore, try moving around—you might be surprised at how much better you feel! 🌱

At Your Physio Health Hub, we know how hard it can be to get started or get back into a routine. That’s where we come in! Whether you’re recovering from an injury or looking to improve mobility, we can help you get back to exercising and feel your best. 🏋️‍♀️🧘‍♂️

We’ll work with you to design a personalized physiotherapy plan that gets you moving safely and effectively—because your body deserves to feel good.

✨ Ready to get moving? Reach out to us today, and let’s make it happen! ✨ Call us on 3425 2643 or head to our website at www.yourphysio.com.au for a full list of our services.

Falls are a major health risk for seniors, but they are not an inevitable part of aging. There are many things that seniors can do to reduce their risk of falling. Here are a few fall prevention strategies:

*Stay physically active. Regular exercise can improve your balance, strength, and coordination, all of which can help to prevent falls.

*Make your home safer. Remove clutter, consider installing grab bars in the bathroom, and ensure there is adequate lighting.

*Get regular eye tests. Changes in vision can increase your risk of falling. Be sure to get regular eye tests and update your eyeglasses or contact lenses as needed.

*Talk to your doctor about your medications. Some medications can increase your risk of falling. Be sure to talk to your doctor about all of the medications you are taking, including over-the-counter medications and supplements.

*Use assistive devices if needed. If you need help getting around, be sure to use assistive devices such as sticks or walkers.

*Get enough sleep. When you are tired, you are more likely to fall. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep each night.

*Eat a healthy diet. Eating a healthy diet can help to improve your overall health and reduce your risk of falling.

*Limit alcohol consumption. Alcohol can impair your balance and coordination, which can increase your risk of falling.

By following these fall prevention strategies, seniors can reduce their risk of falling and maintain their independence.

Can we help you or a loved one with fall prevention? Reach out today by calling the clinic on 3425 2643.
