It's World Menopause Day today.

At Central Highlands Chinese Medicine I treat people all the time for hot flushes and people have great success with Chinese Herbal Medicine to help balance hormones and relieve symptoms. When combined with acupuncture that helps with anxiety and that intangible and indescribable hot feeling that we get when experiencing the sometimes dramatic effects of menopause.

CLINIC MADE BESPOKE HERBAL COUGH SYRUP
(sugar free)

This bottle here contains an interesting test recipe for cough syrup with a honey base of 300ml. Added double the amount of water and cooked the herbs on max heat in the electric wok for about half an hour with the lid on until it began to caramelise, then added more water and took the lid off to reduce it to the quantity I wanted with the consistency a bit more liquid. Then I threw in the Bo He for minty freshness to preserve the volatile oils, left it in for about 2 1/2 minutes, strained it and pressed it through a funnel and added 2 tb ethanol at the end after it cooled slightly to prevent burning off the alcohol.

So far, so good.

I have had about 4 doses and my cough and runny nose have all but gone.

Next time I will do a day and a night formula though because Ren Shen in any amount after about midday will have you pinging the night away regardless of how much yuan Zhi you put in.

Hello beautiful herbalists and gardeners.

A number of weeks ago, a patient brought me a bunch of Forsythia (Lian Qiao in Chinese Medicine) flowers. I put them in a vase and the flowers have fallen off but the stalks have kept growing.

If anyone would like to take one to attempt to grow your own plant (it's a large bush I believe so you really need space to grow it in, not just the pot) please get in contact and I am happy to provide you with a stalk to try.

Next step is to throw out the ones that are not growing, and separate the stalks into their own containers, add some rooting powder and see what happens next.

After they grow some roots in the water I will see about transferring them to some soil.

Please PM if interested and willing to travel to Daylesford to collect it.

Sometimes it's really important to have some time out and reset your spirit. Today my time out was spent at Gariwerd (aka the Australian Grampians, in North West Victoria). Water people will understand the power of water's natural flow which continues and relentlessly reaches its goal. It shows us perspective when we start thinking that life and our projects are all our responsibility and that we must push them in order for anything to happen.

Surrender belongs to Water, as does Wu Wei, the naturally occuring flow of events that have had a pathway either constructed or eroded towards it. Water is the mother of Wood, the current season. That is why we set things in motion at the end of winter and with the moon phases.

In other words, if it's meant to happen, you can't f*** it up, ever.

I love youse all.

Magnesium flakes are back in stock. Raw Food Factory 1kg are pure magnesium chloride and by far the best I have yet discovered. They are quite concentrated so half a cup will melt your body and relax you as you soak in the tub.

I also use these in the formula for Twinkletoes, the delicious, luxurious foot soak for tired feet and sore legs, made from an artisan crafted Chinese herbal formula and tested rigorously for the right feeling, to make your feet sparkle.

Drop by Tuesday & Thursday afternoons, all day Friday and Saturday 10-2pm. Old Police Quarters, historic law precinct, Camp St Daylesford.

Or text me on 0422 353 446 and I'll save you some.

This beautiful gift from a very kind patient is the flower of our very own Forsythia suspensa, AKA Lian Qiao.

As with many herbs, the parts we need appear when we most need to use them as medicine. In Chinese herbal medicine we use the fruit of the Forsythia plant which appears in late summer, to kill off bacterial infections in the respiratory system and ease a sore throat. It's one of the primary ingredients in the formula that is most commonly used for summer colds that start with a sore throat, Yin Qiao San.

Every herb we use has its own personality.
If you're a practitioner, treat them as your dearly loved friends and get to know them by character before you use them. It's the best way to learn.

If you're a patient, you can do your own research by looking up the botanical name and finding current research, as well as looking at the traditional uses.

Have a beautiful day β˜ΊοΈπŸ™πŸ’šπŸŒ±

Today I ran out of paper bags because I kept forgetting them at the supermarket.

LUCKY!!! I had a roll of brown paper, and had the knowledge of how to traditionally wrap Chinese herbs that I learned at uni a those years ago.

It reminds me of the traditional scales and the old ways of doing things that we all need to be aware of in the case of zombie apocalypse...

All set to go, my patient wandered home feeling great with her bag of traditionally wrapped herbs, none the wiser ☺️
