Today marks the start of Mental Health Month, and this year’s theme is The Art of Wellbeing.

At Deakin Private Hospital, mental wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do — for our patients, our staff, and our community.

Throughout October, we’ll be sharing resources, reflections, and simple activities to support your mental health and spark conversations about what wellbeing really means.

Congratulations Jasper!

Each month, we award a staff member with the 'Love Your Work' award. We’re excited to announce Jasper as the Love Your Work recipient for September.

Jasper is one of our Administration Officers, and has gone above and beyond—keeping our medical records scanning up to date and taking the initiative with learning a new software to better our services. His proactive approach and commitment to supporting the team has made a real difference.

Thank you, Jasper, for the positive impact you make every day!

Yesterday, we attended the 'Job Jump' industry event at Namadgi School, where we met Year 9 & 10 students and shared what a career in healthcare can look like.

Students took part in our spinning wheel quiz and incorporated art therapy through designing chatterboxes – filled with practical coping strategies to use when things feel stressful.

If you would like to try creating your own chatterbox, follow these steps >>
1. Start with a square piece of paper & fold the chatterbox (you can find tutorial videos online!).
2. Lay it flat and colour the outside squares with 4 different colours.
3. Open the first layer and number the triangles, 1 - 8.
4. On the very inside layer, write your 8 coping mechanisms in each triangle.

Some ideas include:
- Take 3 deep breaths
- Go for a walk
- Talk to a friend
- Listen to music

A simple activity that’s fun, creative, and gives you a pocket-sized tool for looking after your wellbeing.

Episode 5 of the Aurora Podcast is out — Cognitive Crossroads. Exploring aging, dementia, and the critical role GPs play in early diagnosis, management and supporting families.

In conversation with psychogeriatricians Dr. Penny King and Dr. Prashanti Veeramachaneni, the experts unpack:
• How to tell normal cognitive aging vs early dementia
• Useful tools for assessment in primary care
• Non-medical & medical interventions and when they matter
• Support options for carers and ethical issues like driving & decision capacity

Essential listening for GPs, allied health professionals, and carers supporting people with cognitive changes. Listen here: https://aurorahealth.com.au/aurora-podcast-ep5/

Today is R U OK? Day 💛
It’s a reminder that a simple question — “Are you OK?” — can make a big difference.

Our staff came together to mark the day with a morning tea and shared reflections. Events like these remind us of the importance of connection, both for our patients and within our workplace community.

Let’s keep building a culture where conversations about mental health are safe and supportive.

Today on World Su***de Prevention Day, we pause to acknowledge the many Australians impacted by distress and su***de.

At Deakin Private Hospital, we see the weight people are carrying — with 77% of Australians reporting elevated distress, and 14% experiencing suicidal behaviours in the past year. Behind every number is a person, a family, and a community.

We stand in solidarity with those who are struggling, and with the families and friends who have lost loved ones. Today is a reminder that support, compassion and connection matter more than ever.

We understand that arriving at hospital can feel overwhelming. To support a smooth transition, every inpatient will now receive a copy of our handbook prior to admission.

The Patient handbook provides clear guidance on preparing for their stay, what to bring, a first day schedule, and the routines and facilities that will support recovery.

Our goal is to ensure our patients feel informed, prepared, and reassured from the very beginning of their journey with us.

At Deakin Private Hospital, we’re building a community of passionate professionals dedicated to mental health and recovery.

Our psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, and allied health staff work side by side — collaborating to provide truly personalised care for every patient.
If you’re looking for a career where you’ll be supported, challenged, and inspired, we’d love to hear from you.

Inside Our Psychiatry Team | Dr Matthew Ryan, Psychiatrist

For Dr Matt Ryan, psychiatry is about more than diagnosis and treatment — it’s about understanding people in the context of their lives, experiences, and their aspirations for recovery.

Since graduating from ANU Medical School in 2016, Matt has dedicated his career to supporting individuals through some of life’s most challenging chapters. His work spans public and private mental health services in Canberra, with a strong focus on complex trauma, mood and anxiety disorders, and perinatal mental health.

Matt’s practice is collaborative and person-centred. He works closely with patients, their families, and their broader health team to design management plans that are as unique as the individual themselves.

His preferred approach is psychodynamic psychotherapy, using talk therapy to uncover unconscious patterns, explore the impact of early life experiences, and foster emotional insight that drives meaningful and lasting change.

Having lived in regional Australia, Matt also feels strongly connected to rural communities and is passionate about improving access to mental health care for people in rural and remote areas.
