27 May – 3 June marks National Reconciliation Week 2026, and this year's theme is a reminder that reconciliation isn't a spectator sport. It asks every one of us in our workplaces, our communities, and our everyday lives, to step off the sidelines and take meaningful action.

At Deakin Private Hospital, we recognise that healing begins with connection, respect, and truth. We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we live and work and pay our respects to Elders past and present.
This week and every week, we are committed to walking alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the ongoing journey toward reconciliation.

We're so pleased to welcome Ruby to the Deakin Private Hospital team as our new Admin Manager!
Ruby may be one of the first friendly faces you see when you visit Deakin. She believes great care starts the moment you walk through the door. With a background spanning legal practice management and healthcare administration, she brings calm leadership and a genuine commitment to making every experience — for patients, families, and our clinical team — as smooth as possible.
We're so glad to have her here - welcome Ruby!

Something new is starting at Deakin Private this June — and it might be just what you or someone you love has been looking for.

We're excited to introduce two new programs launching in June:
Creative Pathways: Next Steps Art Therapy
For those who've completed our Creative Therapies for Mood Disorders Program and are ready to go deeper. Through guided art-making — painting, drawing, collage, and symbolic expression — this 12-week program supports emotional awareness, resilience, and a stronger sense of self. No artistic experience needed. First intake starts Thursday 4 June.

Carer Support Program
Caring for someone with a mental health challenge is one of the most important — and often most invisible — roles there is. This 3-week program gives carers, parents, partners, and family members practical tools, meaningful connection, and a space to focus on their own wellbeing. No referral required. First intake starts Monday 22 June.

Places are limited. Reach out early to secure your spot.

Happy International Nurses Day!
Mental health nursing is one of the most meaningful — and most demanding — roles in healthcare. It asks for clinical expertise, emotional strength, and genuine compassion, often all at once.

Today we want to recognise and thank every nurse at Deakin Private Hospital for the difference you make in the lives of our patients, their families, and each other. The care you provide matters more than you know.

Thank you for your dedication, your resilience, and your heart.

Yesterday we had the pleasure of attending the ACT Nursing & Midwifery Careers Expo. The energy in the room was amazing — we had great conversations with so many talented nurses and students who are passionate about mental health care.
If we met you yesterday, it was so lovely to connect. We hope to see you again soon!

Today we pause to remember. ANZAC Day honours the courage, sacrifice, and service of those who came before us — and the generations who continue to serve.

For many, today carries more than remembrance. It can bring grief, pride, heaviness, or a quiet kind of reflection that's hard to name. If you or someone you love is finding it difficult, support is available.

Lest we forget.

The average Australian waits 12 years before seeking help for a mental health problem.

Mental health doesn't always look like someone saying "I'm not okay". Sometimes it's someone pushing through when they shouldn't - or it's visible to everyone except the person experiencing it.

Knowing when — and how — to step in is often the hardest part. If you're worried about someone in your life, trust that instinct.

We are incredibly proud of Dr Ava Carter, our Medical Director, whose Churchill Fellowship research has recently been published.

Ava spent time across five countries exploring a critical but often overlooked connection — the relationship between oral health and mental health. Her findings are fascinating, and her recommendations have the potential to change the way Australia cares for people living with severe mental illness.

We've written about her research on our website — including some of the most striking findings from the report. It's well worth a read!
