Just a normal day in my private practice as IBCLC and Midwife?

Seeing new parents apply newly gained knowledge has to be one of the rewarding parts of my career. When the coin drops , when a baby finally latches and the little gulps of breastmilk mix with the sigh of relief in the parents - this makes my entire career worth it.
Supporting parents through the highs and at times very lows is a privilege.

Pumping as a Milk Donor: Giving the Gift of Life

Did you know that your pumped breast milk make a huge difference for the health not just of your own baby , but also other babies? Milk donation supports preterm or critically ill babies who need extra nourishment when their mothers are unable to provide it. If you’re considering donating, here’s what you need to know:

✅ Eligibility: Most milk banks require donors to be in good health, nonsmokers, and free from certain medications. Screening ensures milk safety.
✅ Storage Standards: Proper collection, storage, and freezing (−18°C or below) are essential for maintaining milk quality. Label your milk with the date/time of expression.
✅ Where to Donate: Check milk banks in your country for guidelines. They may provide containers and instructions for milk drop-off or collection.

Milk donation is a beautiful way to share the gift of nourishment and support families in need. Always consult your healthcare provider or a milk bank for more details about the donation process.

Did You Know?

Summer heat in Australia can reach a scorching 40°C (104°F) – that’s tough on your baby’s delicate skin! Here are some tips to keep your little one safe:

👉🏼 Babies can lose fluids quickly in the heat, so keeping them hydrated is key! For babies under 6 months, offer more breast milk or formula instead of water. For those aged 6-12 months, small amounts of water can be introduced.
👉🏼 Dress your baby in lightweight, breathable clothing made from natural fibers like cotton to help them stay cool.
👉🏼 Avoid direct sun exposure to protect their sensitive skin. Keep them in the shade or indoors especially during peek hours .
👉🏼 Always monitor for signs of dehydration, such as fewer wet nappies or lethargy, and consult your health care professional if you have concerns.
👉🏼 Do not cover pram hoods or baby capsules, as this can block airflow and increase the risk of overheating. Instead, ensure adequate shade and ventilation.

Following these tips helps keep your baby cool, hydrated, and safe during hot summer days!

Wondering how long you can store your expressed breast milk? Here are the updated guidelines:

- Room Temperature (Up to 25°C or 77°F): Safe for up to 4 hours.
- Refrigerator (≤4°C or 39°F): Store milk for up to 4 days (96 hours).
- Freezer (−18°C or lower): Ideal for up to 6 months, but can be safe for up to 12 months in a deep freezer.
- Professionally freeze dried up to 3 years.

Always label your milk with the date and time of expression, and use the oldest milk first. Following these storage tips helps keep your milk safe and nutritious for your baby!
