Today we are honouring one of the good ones. A woman so strong. Who gave the most amazing hugs. Despite all her own struggles, she always had time to be kind, generous and tell me she loved me. I was just her daughter’s support worker. But I will miss her. Maybe not the late night phone calls asking to help with an email 😂. But definitely the hugs and honest relationship of mutual respect and care. Rest well Monika Lewis. ❤️

Summer has arrived here in Brisbane so it was a great day to go to the beach for some running, water fights and exploring. Today’s adventure took place at Wellington Point where we could head off just before low tide to explore the isthmus leading to King Island. The water was clear and warm. We all got saturated. And then ate fish and chips for lunch.

Happy 40th to Captain Fantastic! He had a wonderful party today. He has a lot of friends in the local community who came out to celebrate. For some reason, there was no “boys” photo … only a “girls” photo.

One of the men we support is turning the big four oh. He loves police. We are grateful to one of our neighbours who knew this - she organised a surprise visit from the community police team. The birthday man got to turn on the lights and sirens, and talk over the police car PA. And half the street came out to celebrate with him.

Mondays done right - a spot of sailing. We’re grateful to the many volunteers who make Sailability happen. The men we support both love being out on the water - whether in a sailing dingy or on the pontoon boat.

One of our participants has a passion for all things motorsport. So we’ve come out to Qld Raceway to indulge in a day of racing.

Our participant loves cars. That’s an understatement. So we’re out at the Real Steel and Chrome show in Yatala.

The campfire season has finally returned. The participant loved building the fire and is now enjoying a beer.

We love having access to a community garden where this sort of fun can be had. This is why we love providing short term accommodation - we get to facilitate out of the ordinary experiences.

The final day of our road trip. One participant got to have his horse experience. Leading a horse is an exercise in cooperation and emotional regulation. It requires confidence balanced with humility. Goomeri is a great town for truck watching too. Our other participant is usually quiet and shy but this trip brought him out of his shell - because there were just so many trucks to talk about. And after all that horse play and truck talking, everyone was hungry for bakery.

Day 3 was a travel day. We drove from Miles to Goomeri. On the way, we stopped at Durong for some servo snacks. It’s rhetorical transition from B-Doubles to Road Trains so the men enjoyed seeing all the extra truck trailers sitting on the pad across from the servo. In the afternoon, everyone agreed that sitting in the shade watching the tens of trucks driving through Goomeri was the best idea. This also gave one of the men time to practice using his communication device. A rare opportunity in a busy life.

Day 2 of the trip was a mini pub crawl. After buying a huge watermelon and some massive pumpkins (much to our participant’s delight), we had drinks at the Kogan Hotel and lunch at the Condamine Bell Hotel. We all played some pool with quite loose rules. One of the men we support only has effective use of one hand so he used the cross stick so that he didn’t have to worry about ripping the fabric. Adaptation at work. After a big feed and a bit more driving, we arrived in Miles. Both men loved collecting brochures from the visitor centre before a chilled afternoon watching passing trucks and trains at camp.

With the east coast getting wet, we’ve come out to the Western Downs to explore and grow. Two of the men we support were keen for a camping trip. Unfortunately, the rain kept us away from the Maryborough speedway event but a pub tour of the Western Downs is a great alternative.

Trips like this help the men we support develop resilience as they prepare to move out of their family homes, relax away from the hustle of the city to reset sensory overload, and engage with strangers at pubs. We have found that while the men we support are often invisible and ignored in city settings, country people always include them in conversations.
