Today I am making jam and marmalade. Over this weekend I will have made about 60 jars of preserves using rescued fruit and recycled jars as part of the Janeys Jars project that supports youth and community initiatives. During the latter half of the 1970s my sister Anne-Louise and I were members of the Hawkes Bay Presbyterian Harriers. Our daughter Dianne planted a citrus Grove along the side of he house a few years ago and this is now producing a plentiful crop of limes, lemons and manderins. Currently she is supplying me with lemons for my own use- think gin & tonic- and as a surplus crop for my Janeys Jars project. Dianne has previously had a large crop of thyme which we dried for future use...today is its future....

I am always looking for ways to reduce food waste and utilise surplus seasonal produce. This has lead to the Janeys Jars project, a small social enterprise, that sees Kyle-Scott Services collecting surplus produce to turn into a range of Jams, Pickles and Chutneys in donated recycled jars. These tasty treats are then used to support the student of Kairos Community College by donating them for student consumption or donating the proceeds of sales....
