Members of Dee Why SLSC travelled to The EID Show Festival at Bankstown Showground last Saturday afternoon/evening to help run the festival's Surf Life Saving NSW beach safety information tent. 🏖️🛟

The Annual Eid Show has been running for 15 years and draws tens of thousands of attendees. It was a great opportunity to share our life saving experience and water and beach safety knowledge directly to a range of demographics that are sadly overrepresented in coastal drowning statistics 🏊

Our Dee Why SLSC members had a great time - enjoying great food, and watching the fun on the rides, music, singers, fireworks, all whilst engaging with hundreds of community members on the topic of beach safety🥳

Thank you and for the opportunity to spread a beach safety message, and thank you .sydney for the delicious traditional Arab dessert Knafeh!

First Aid Friday– Management of Australian Snake bite
Snake venoms are complex mixtures of toxins which cause nerve, blood and cardiovascular effects in humans. A few people die of snake bite in Australia each year. The greatest threat to life and cause of >50% of deaths is cardiovascular collapse/arrest which can occur within 10 minutes to 1 hour of a bite with envenomation (the venom enters the body). Most often cardiac arrest happens before transport to hospital and requires immediate CPR. Other significant effects include: major bleeding (venom affects ability of blood to clot); nerve paralysis so respiratory muscles cannot work; muscle damage; kidney failure as microscopic blood clots accumulate. Early treatment can save lives and reduce the likelihood of these effects. The person should not move and compression bandages should be applied as soon as possible. Compression bandages are in the cupboards above the counter in the first aid room.

First Aid Friday -Initial Management of Suspected Spinal Injury
Head injury/major trauma – think spinal injury. The risk of worsening a spinal injury before hospitalisation has probably been overstated however care must be taken to minimise any secondary injury. Caution must be taken when moving a person with a suspected spinal injury. Of note the cervical spine is particularly vulnerable and anyone with a traumatic head injury should be treated as if their spine is injured. Airway management should take precedence over concern about any suspected spinal injury. Use spinal board only if the person must be moved before the ambulance arrives. The use of cervical collars in the prehospital setting is not recommended.

First Aid Friday - Shock
Shock is a life-threatening condition which manifests when there is insufficient oxygen supply to the tissues. Initially adrenaline is released; this increases the heart rate and constricts the blood vessels raising the blood pressure. If the situation is not reversed blood flow to the vital organs (heart, brain, lungs and kidneys) may be insufficient and they may die. It is vital to identify shock early and transfer the person to hospital for definitive treatment. Remember: “Could it be sepsis?”. Hope you find this useful.

First Aid Fridays - treatment for Jumble Jelly fish (CARYBDEA RASTONI) sting
The ‘Jumble jelly’ seem not to have appeared yet at Dee Why beach this season. However given the trouble they caused two seasons ago I thought a reminder might be helpful. There’s still some controversy / confusion about recognising the sting and treatment. This is what is known and some guidance about the best treatment. Attached is a summary – spoiler alert – shower in hot water as hot as the person can bare i.e., >45C for at least 20 minutes after dousing with vinegar to deactivate the stinging cells. N.B. There are two bottles of vinegar in the first aid room bedside the shower for this (Thanks for NOT using this for blue bottle stings – it is a waste as it does work).
