"It has been over a year since I had my LASIK surgery and I've almost forgotten I ever wore glasses!

I was recently packing for a trip to Katoomba over the long weekend and saw 'Glasses and contacts' on my notes app packing list. I was so confused about what past me had meant — drinking glasses for a trip away? Then I realised!

It's so nice that I no longer need to carry the mental load of 'Where are my glasses?', 'Do I have enough contacts to last me?', or 'Will I need prescription sunnies and non-prescription sunnies to wear with contacts?'

I'm still experiencing nice little reminders of the difference in my eyesight from before to now, and I am still so happy with my decision!"

"I just got my licence renewed for 10 years, and they had to change my classification on my licence. My eyes were perfect! I was easily able to do all the tests and not have to change contacts and glasses. I wanted to read the very bottom line of the eye test and have them challenge me!

Before, I couldn't drive safely without my glasses. My prescription wasn't very strong, but I wasn't comfortable driving without glasses or contacts. Now, I can read all the signs— everything is crystal clear."

"It's funny— it's just integrated into my normal life now and it's just like a new reality. I almost don't think about it. I was thinking about it a lot at the start, but now it's just taken for granted that it's clear. No contacts, no glasses.

The convenience factor of not having to worry about cleaning the lenses, not having to replace my contacts all the time, and the expense of having to keep on top of them— it's a continual investment, and getting LASIK absolutely pays off over time.

I do yoga and training, but just not having it in my daily routine— it's such an adult power move! I don't have to think about this ever again."

"How's life with LASIK?

Good! Day to day it's great. I was so grateful in the first week or two, but now I'm used to it. It was always a thing I thought of but never really did, but then I decided - alright - stop being lazy and sort it out!

I work in construction - project management - reading detailed plans. I was a monthly contact wearer and the contacts were perfect when straight out of the solution, but as the days went on, they got worse and worse, and my eyes would start to suffer.

But now, my vision is clearer than when I had contacts and there's no discomfort. It's been brilliant."

Meet Naz, Freedom Eye Laser's resident Doctor of Therapeutic Optometry. Naz joined our team in 2016 to provide our patients with comprehensive eye care when it comes to Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) and discomfort caused by dry eyes. Naz provides post-surgery care and review for most of Dr Genge's surgery patients. She also triages patients coming in new to the clinic and runs the Dry Eye Clinic.

"I have a profound interest in science and the human body, in particular, problem-solving. When I was younger, having a good experience with an eye test was the first time I considered being a clinician in this field", says Naz.

As a dry eye sufferer herself, Naz has invaluable insights into the experiences and treatments available: "I can empathise with my patients, and anticipate what their needs may be. I also test almost all of the products on myself as a review prior to prescribing. And since it's of personal interest to me, I am up-to-date and conservatively screen new developments in the field."

During her 9 years at Freedom Eye Laser, Naz has seen her fair share of how Dry Eye Syndrome can impact a person's daily life. "Given dry eye is a chronic condition, it can really get a person down. If the case is severe enough, then it can impact daily life and even lead to loss of ability to work", she noted.

When asked what Naz loves most about her role, she said, "Meeting and learning from my patients - not only eye-related but life in general. Nothing beats the feeling when I know I have made a positive impact on a patient's life."
