Did you know that by age three, some children have heard millions more words than others?

Researchers Betty Hart and Todd Risley discovered what’s now known as the “word gap” — a difference of roughly 5,000 words in young children’s vocabularies depending on how much language they were exposed to at home.

It’s not about intelligence — it’s about exposure. Children who hear more words, conversations, and stories early on build stronger language, reading, and learning skills later in life.
