Gabon is one of the most forested countries in the world, with up to 90% of its land covered by rainforest in the Congo Basin. This makes it a hotspot for biodiversity, home to forest elephants, gorillas, and chimpanzees. Its national parks—like Loango National Park—are especially unique, where wildlife such as elephants and hippos can sometimes be seen walking along the beach. Gabon has also taken major steps in conservation, setting aside about 11% of its land as protected national parks.
Despite its small population of around 2 million, Gabon is relatively wealthy due to oil production. The capital, Libreville, was founded by freed slaves, and the country still reflects strong French influence from its colonial past, with French as the official language. Gabon lies on the equator, giving it a hot, humid climate year-round, and its culture includes spiritual traditions like Bwiti, known for its use of the iboga plant. On our armchair travel adventure this round, we enjoyed Poulet Fumé au Nyembwe, a rich, smoky chicken dish cooked in palm nut sauce that’s a staple of local cuisine.
We also enjoyed a visit from Denman Public School, where the Year 3 students spent time reading books and drawing flowers together, adding their creative touches to the artwork.
We are now coming into flu season and both residents and staff are taking care of their health by receiving their flu vaccines. As in previous years, staff, visitors etc need to have had a flu vaccine in order to enter any Residential Aged Care Facility from 1st June 2026 until 30th September 2026.
From 1st June, you will be required to show proof of vaccination on entry to Denman Residential Aged Care Facility.
Children are exempt.
We all appreciate your understanding as the wellbeing of our residents are our upmost priority.
