Vitamin B’s, Deficiencies of B vitamins have been associated with a number of fertility problems, including foetal abnormalities, such as neural tube defects, neonatal or perinatal death, low birth weight and miscarriage. Therefore it is important to ensure that the B vitamin requirements of each individual couple are identified and maintained during the preconception period. It is important to consider that alcohol, carbohydrate-rich diets, and the oral contraceptive pill increase the body's requirements for B vitamins. As such, any couple that wants to optimise their fertility and has a history involving these variables may require additional B vitamins to prepare their bodies for future conception. Acknowledging that stress also increases requirements for B vitamins and that stress has been identified as playing a major factor in couples who have difficulty conceiving, the importance of adequate B vitamin intake is further emphasised.
