Taiwanese researchers discovered acupuncture triggering stem cell release healing damaged organs naturally. Scientists at China Medical University found that electroacupuncture at specific meridian points stimulates bone marrow to release mesenchymal stem cells into circulation, which then migrate to injured organs and promote tissue repair. This mechanism explains acupuncture's therapeutic effects through measurable biological processes rather than placebo.

Traditional Chinese medicine has used acupuncture for thousands of years, but Western medicine dismissed it as placebo due to lack of biological mechanism. Taiwanese researchers using advanced imaging and cellular tracking discovered that needle stimulation at specific points triggers measurable stem cell mobilization—providing the first clear biological explanation for acupuncture's effects.

Electroacupuncture (needles with mild electrical current) at ST36 (Zusanli point) and GV20 (Baihui point) causes a 300% increase in circulating stem cells within 24 hours. These mobilized stem cells express homing signals drawing them to damaged tissues—injured liver, heart, kidneys, or brain—where they differentiate into organ-specific cells and release healing factors. It's like acupuncture triggers the body's internal repair dispatch system.

Stroke patients receiving electroacupuncture within 48 hours of stroke showed 40% better functional recovery than those receiving standard care alone. Liver cirrhosis patients showed reduced fibrosis markers. Heart attack survivors demonstrated improved cardiac function. The mechanism is entirely biological—traced stem cells from bone marrow to damaged organs. Skeptical Western physicians are reconsidering acupuncture given this mechanistic evidence. We're discovering that ancient healing practices work through sophisticated biological mechanisms science is only now capable of detecting.

This week, for the Pain Series, we will be talking about LOWER BACK and HIP PAIN.

The lower back and hips consists of bones, muscles and tendons. This is a connecting point for the upper body and lower limbs. Therefore, any issue with the lower back or hips can affect the functions of the lower limbs too. 🛣

The hips enable the waist to bend side to side, front to back and rotating. Hence, it is crucial to have the flexibility to execute these motions. Also, the lower back holds the torso up, hence the importance of having strong lumbar muscles. 💪🏻

Lower back and hips issues can be caused by inflammation/stagnation, resulting in discomfort. ⛔️

A common syndrome experience would be Sciatica. This is a kind of pain having a shooting sensation down to the foot from the lower back.

Factors leading to these pain can be external injury, wind invasion, postural issue or overuse. 📜

WIND/COLD INVASION: Prolonged exposure of the lower back in the cold or windy weather, causes them to stiffen-up. Hence the importance in keeping the wrists warm when needed.

POSTURAL ISSUE: Sitting or laying down constantly in a bad position, keeps the lower back and hips in unnecessary tension for a long time; building excessive "stress acid" accumulation, causing soreness. Hence the importance of postural care education.

OVERUSE: Having to use the lower back and hips a lot in a repetitive motion, especially the gym junkies or tradies, wears out the muscles and tendons in the lower back and hips. Hence the importance of moderate use. This also applies to overweight/obese individual for needing to bear excessive body weight constantly. Therefore, it is important to maintain a healthy body weight to physical support.

Treatment plan varies depending on severity. 🪡

Here at Empirical Therapy Centre, we can help people with pain management of the lower back and hip. 📍

Acupuncture point of the day: GB-30 环跳穴

GB-30 Huan Tiao is part of the Gallbladder meridian. It is also known as "Jumping Rounds", translated directly from Chinese Mandarin. 🇨🇳

To locate the point, find a tender spot using the thumb or tennis ball on outside border of the buttock muscle, connecting the hip and thigh bone, as shown in Picture 1. 🎾

With locating the point, a sore, achy, tender or distended sensation could sometimes be felt. Meaning a precision is achieved. 🎯

GB-30 is used to Activate meridian, Remove obstruction, Resolves Wind-Damp and Relieves pain. 🤕

It is beneficial for sciatica, weakness and discomfort in the lower extremities or lumbar and legs, hemiplegia, arthritis, urticaria, skin issues and etc. ⛑️

For homework, clients can massage the point using the thumb or tennis ball. Gently massage the spot shown in Picture 1 for about 1-2 minutes. 😮‍💨

Herb of the day: LONG YAN ROU 龙眼肉

Long Yan Rou aka. Longan Fruit can be found at the Asian market or mainly the Chinese herbal shops, often in the dried form. It can be used in different ways due to the sweet taste it delivers. 😋

Long Yan Rou governs the Spleen and Heart meridian. It is often used to settle the digestive system and in turn calms the spirit (Shen). This aids in sleep issues particularly affected by digestive issues or disharmony in the gut. ⚖️

Long Yan Rou can be used in its raw or dried form. However, the raw form would be difficult to obtain here in Australia. It can be eaten raw as fresh or dried fruit, used for tea brewing, salads, herbal soups, dessert, or porridge. Some may also use it to make wine. 🍷

This week, for the Pain Series, we will be talking about WRIST PAIN.

The wrist consists of bones, muscles and tendons. This is a connecting point for the forearm and the hand. Therefore, any issue with the wrist can affect them too. 🛣

The wrist enables the hand to rotate as well as lifting. Hence, it is important to have the strength and flexibility to execute these motions. 🫳🏻

Wrist issues can be caused by inflammation/stagnation, resulting in pain, numbness or a tingling sensation. ⛔️

A common syndrome experience with wrist pain would be Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. This is an inflammation event where the blood supply, nerves and tendons are all squeezed within the "tunnel" of the wrist, restricting the proper flow, causing pain.

Factors leading to wrist pain can be external injury, wind invasion, postural issue or overuse. 📜

WIND/COLD INVASION: Prolonged exposure of the wrists in the cold or windy weather, causes them to "freeze" up. Hence the importance in keeping the wrists warm when needed.

POSTURAL ISSUE: Being on desk duty, constant use of the mouse or keyboard in a bad posture, puts unnecessary stress on the wrist, leading to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Hence the importance of postural care education.

OVERUSE: Having to use the wrist a lot in a repetitive motion, especially cooks, massage therapists, etc. wears out the muscles and tendons in the wrist. Hence the importance of balance use of both hands and stretching when needed.

Treatment plan varies depending on severity. Acupuncture along with other TCM treatment modalities are useful for shoulder pain. 🪡

Here at Empirical Therapy Centre, we can help people with pain management of the shoulder. 📍

Acupuncture point of the day: LI-05 阳溪穴

LI-05 Yang Xi is part of the Large Intestine meridian. It is also known as "Yang Ravine", translated directly from Chinese Mandarin. 🇨🇳

To locate the point, with the thumb up, find a hollow formed between the thumb and the side of the wrist. Feel for a tender spot with adequate pressure. 🤙🏻

With locating the point, a sore, achy, tender or distended sensation could sometimes be felt. Meaning a precision is achieved. 🎯

LI-05 is used to Clear Heat, Clear Fire, Calm the Spirit and Alleviate pain. 🔥

It is beneficial for headaches, eyes issues (ie. redness, swelling and etc.), toothache, sore throat, manic, depression and as the location indicates, for wrist pain too. 🫳🏻

For homework, clients can massage the point using the thumb. Gently massage the spot shown in Picture 1 for about 1-2 minutes. 😮‍💨

Here at Empirical Therapy Centre, we use only single-use disposable needles. 📍
