Did you know that 90% of vision loss is preventable or treatable when detected early?

Yet many Australians delay their eye checks, often until symptoms become serious.

Millions live with long-term eye conditions like myopia (short-sightedness), hyperopia (long-sightedness), astigmatism, cataracts, and macular degeneration.

The problem? Well, many of these conditions can develop gradually, without noticeable symptoms in the early stages. That’s why regular eye exams matter. They help detect issues early and give you the best chance to protect your vision in the long run.

Let JulEYE be your reminder to put your eye health first, because prevention starts with awareness.

Hitting the slopes this winter? Don’t forget protection!

Sun safety doesn’t take a holiday in winter, especially at the snow. At higher altitudes, UV rays can be even more intense and reflect off the snow, increasing your risk of eye damage. High winds can also harm our eyes in harsh snowy conditions!

Whether you’re skiing, snowboarding, or just enjoying the snow, make sure to:
🕶Wear sunglasses or goggles with high UV protection.
🕶Consider using wraparound styles that block reflected rays.
🕶Pack a spare pair of sunnies, just in case!

Your eyes need just as much protection at the snow as they do at the beach.

Regular eye tests from a young age enable us to detect any early signs of myopia before it fully develops.

We have treatment options available to slow the rate of progression, with the aim of reducing its severity and protecting children from eye complications associated with high myopia in their adult years. Book an appointment with us today to get ahead of the curve.

It's Diabetes Awareness Week!
Did you know that diabetes can affect your eyes?

Diabetes can lead to serious eye conditions like macular edema and diabetic retinopathy - both of which can cause vision loss if untreated. Both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes also increases your risk of developing glaucoma and cataracts.

Managing your diabetes and having regular comprehensive eye exams are key steps to protect your sight. If you have diabetes, don’t wait for symptoms; early detection and treatment can save your vision.

Take care of your eyes, and encourage your loved ones to do the same this Diabetes Awareness Week.

This JulEYE, let’s build simple habits that go a long way in supporting health.

Here are some daily practices to support your eye health:

👀Blink more & take screen breaks – Follow the 20-20-20 rule to reduce digital eye
strain: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. In addition, make the effort to consciously remind yourself to blink more frequently when using
screens for extended periods.

💧Use eye drops to stay hydrated – Dry eyes? Keep eye drops close by and stay
well-hydrated to keep your eyes hydrated.

🕶Wear sunglasses for UV safety – Even in winter, UV rays can harm your eyes.
Protect them outdoors with high quality sunglasses. Look for those with a rating of UV400+.

🦠Practice good hygiene – Wash your hands before touching your face or eyes, and
clean your lenses or glasses regularly to avoid irritation and infection.

🤓Refill & update prescriptions – Make sure your glasses or contact lens
prescriptions are up to date. Remember your vision can change over time, and can vary between glasses and contacts so ensure your prescription is suited to your current needs.

⌚️Schedule regular eye exams – Don’t wait for symptoms. Proactive eye exams help
catch issues early, before they affect your vision. Book one now!

Remember, healthy eyes start with healthy habits. Which one will you start to implement today?

Not sure if a child might need glasses? Here are five signs to watch out for:

🤔 Squinting

Frequent squinting may be a sign that a child is trying to focus better or reduce blurriness caused by refractive errors like near-sightedness or farsightedness.

📺 Sitting too close to screens

If a child often sits very close to the television or holds devices too close to their face, it may indicate difficulty seeing clearly from a normal distance.

🤲 Frequent eye rubbing

While children might rub their eyes when tired or upset, frequent rubbing can also indicate eye strain or fatigue, possibly from struggling to see clearly.

🤕 Complaints of headaches

Regular complaints of headaches, especially after reading or doing other close activities, can be a sign of eyestrain or vision issues needing correction.

🫣 Covering one eye

Covering one eye can be a method children use to cope with double vision or to see more clearly if one eye has much better focus than the other.

If you notice any of these signs, it might be time for a visit to the optometrist.
