Most parents with first aid training have done courses that were mostly about adults and only just touched on the treatment of small children. This is a problem, as little ones are treated differently to adults. Steve Lewsen, director of Family First Aid, has been running child-specific first-aid courses for over 27 years. He has an exceptionally good reputation in WA and is well known for teachin

g in a manner that leaves parents feeling confident that they will be able to handle a medical emergency. Steve's courses have saved dozens of lives over the years and he has been interviewed on Channel 7 and Nine News and has also been featured in The West. PRIVATE courses can be run in your home and PUBLIC courses are available too.

From providing emergency medical care to needing it myself!

I’m used to being the carer when it comes to medical issues, but for the first time in a long time, the roles were reversed this week.

I went to bed on Monday night feeling 100% and within five minutes had crippling pain in my right lower back and overwhelming nausea, which I immediately recognised as a kidney stone, as I had the same issue about 14 years ago.

I tried to “tough it out” for a couple of hours, knowing from experience that the symptoms can go away just as quickly as they came and I could then see my GP in the morning, but eventually I knew I had to get to Emergency

I was given medication for pain and nausea and a CT scan showed that I had a small and a large kidney stone on the right hand side.

My kidney function wasn’t great as a result and so last night I underwent surgery to have both removed and I’m now recovering at home. It’s obviously been a very rough couple of days.

We all know that our health system has some big issues, but if it wasn’t for the kind nurses, doctors, surgeon, anaesthetist and other staff, I would’ve been in a whole lot of trouble.

I think we all realise only too well that we need medical staff, but we don’t realise how much until we truly need them!
