Kapaalrandhra Dhauti (Facial Sinus & Lymph nodes cleaning technique)

One of the 6 cleansing processes (Shat-kriya) suggested by Hatha Yoga tradition, to be done daily before Yoga practices.

These gentle movements have helped me as well as many others to relieve / / , ultimately promoting the healthy movement of mucus in upper respiratory organs and sinus passages; reducing the presence of allergens in stagnent sinus fluid.

(These moves are inspired by Vritti changing technique coach - Ms Suchitra. 🙏)

May the Sadhana/practice done on this auspicious night of Maha Shivratri brings complete union with our Higher Self / Divine Consciousness; and helps us to perceive the entire world as an emanation of beauty, contentment, joy and truth.

🕉🙏🕉

"यत्प्रज्ञानमुतचेतो धृतिश्च
यज्ज्योतिरन्तरमृतं प्रजासु ।
यस्मान्नऋते किञ्चन  कर्मक्रियते
तन्मे मनः शिवसंकल्पमस्तु ॥"

"That which is awareness in itself, that which is consciousness; that which is patience, sustenance and memory.

That which is imortal light within all creatures, that without which no action is performed.

May my mind be calm and focused in That intention."

And these words swiftly slipped out of my mouth… “Right now, at this very moment - You’re doing more Yog(a) than me or anyone else I’ve seen, lately!”
During our weekly yoga practice, the above words made my student (who is suffering with MND) misty-eyed!
Most of us take such physical movements for granted, and hardly notice its complexity at a deeper cellular level.
But for someone who has been diagnosed with an incurable degenerative disease through which she lost movement of all her limbs one after the other; these simple movements after months of practice are like a strong rope to hold on-to in the journey of faith!
So, PAUSE and look at those movements in the video, again.. as what you’re looking at, is Yog(a)!
What is Yog(a)?
A set of exercise or fitness routine? A cult or a religion?
None of the above!
Yog(a) literally means union or to join – when two or more substances are joined together or works in unanimity creating a bond of harmony as One. This harmony ignites the experience of Oneness / Nonduality – Advaita.
To reconnect and strengthen the damaged nerves to make a muscle move against all the odds, requires that harmony with our Higher Self!
The wonders of such harmony physical and subtle bodies, that I witnessed many years ago in my father on his path of recovery from a destructive stroke; got reiterated recently with this student thriving with her practice traditional Yog(a).
Next time when you’re practicing Yog(a), ask yourself –
"Am I connecting with my Higher self? Or with my Yoga mat?" 😉

Why do I say, “Lock your eyes at one focal point!”??!! 👀
Once you’re in the asana/pose, and the teacher says, “Stay in the asana for a few seconds/mins.!!”
We try to hold our bodies in one posture, as Sthir/stable as possible.. no movement at all..
But our eyes start looking around.. “Hmmm, my pose isn’t upto the mark as that other student..” “Wow, look at their cool yoga pants..”
And the mind starts racing.. “Planning a coffee catch-up after this class..” “Thinking about pending work at office!!”
Instead, what we must be doing is to focus the gaze at one steady point; to eliminate other visual distractions and travel internally to different body parts; deepening the body awareness.
The goal is to shift our focus towards our inner experience.
There are two types of Drishti / focal points:

● Bahya Drishti – an external focal point to be gazed on during an asana, to eliminate other visual distractions.

● Anatara Drishti – an internal focal point (within the body) with closed eyes, to encourage Pratyahara (withdrawal of senses) taking the mind deeper into Dharana (yogic concentration).
It’s not just about Where to look, it’s also about How to look!

》 pick a non-moving object/point to lock your gaze, during asana.

》 remember, you’re not analysing that focal point/object, look beyond it, as it becomes blur!

》 do not strain the eyes, the gaze must be soft and muscles around the eyes relaxed

》 take deep and rhythmic breaths – like waves in the ocean!

》 then draw your awareness inwards, travelling within the body…
The next time when I say “lock your gaze at one point" in the class, know that your body and mind will gain many benefits:

🎯 focusing the gaze, directly influences the optic nerve that connects the eyes and brain, stimulating different regions of the brain including the Pineal gland.

🎯 improves eyesight

🎯 improves body alignment and awareness

🎯 encourages deeper level of concentration

🎯 increases focus and memory retention

🎯 prepares the mind to reach to a point of stillness...

“कोऽहं – Who am I?”

न मृत्युर्न शङ्का न मे जातिभेदः
No fear of death, no separation, nor bound to any caste or creed

पिता नैव मे नैव माता न जन्मः ।
Not a mother, nor a father, not even birth; I am beyond all these

न बन्धुर्न मित्रं गुरुर्नैव शिष्यं
Not a relative, nor a friend; neither a teacher, nor a disciple

चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोऽहम् शिवोऽहम् ॥५॥
I am That Ever Pure Blissful Consciousness, I am Shiv(a), I am Shiv(a).. Pure love

I grew up listening to these beautiful lines gracefully chanted by my Mother.. who not only chanted this mantra, but also explained the deeper meaning behind it’s carefully woven potent words..

You see, a mantra becomes more powerful, when we chant with a particular intonations, understand its meaning as well as experience it - by Living them.

I grew up watching both my parents Living these lines truly!

Together, they made sure to instil in us, the love towards our roots, our heritage, our scriptures and practices..

Being born in a lineage of Teachers/Acharyas, we were not only surrounded by spiritual practices, but were also given a scientific view towards why we are performing them.

Discussions connecting Precognition with the theory of Parallel Universes and Quantum Physics were common during our Chai (tea) time conversations!

Performing Yagna (holy fire), Upwas(fasting), Hast mudra, Asanas(poses), Pranayama(breath regulation) and their effects on Human body/mind as well as on the whole Cosmos; were discussed in depth on such auspicious occasions like today (Maha Shivaratri – a night of finding stillness, while staying Awakened).

So, when someone asks me, who’s my Guru? Or which Paramapara(yogic tradition) I follow? Or how many 200hr, 300hr,…certificates have I pocketed?

I just SMILE! 😊

I will always be indebted to “my first Guru – my parents” and “the Elders” of my family, for passing down their precious collective knowledge about Science and Spirituality 🙏

And lastly, to the one and only Yog(a) Guru – the Adi Guru – Shiv, from whom the science of Yog(a) originated..

May this MahaShivratri leads us nearer to the Shiva Tattva within us, helping us to answer this inevitable question..

"कोऽहं ? - who am I?"

“Even if everything goes upside down, you remain steady from within!”
2020 has been a topsy-turvy, roller coaster ride; and is still unsettled creating ripples and (2nd, 3rd…) waves, this year…
It’s quite hard to change and control everything that happens around us, but at least we can change something that is within us… our perspective to look at our surroundings…
Quoting an old proverb here, “Let the muddy lake settle down, to make its water clearer.”
A disturbed, distracted mind is similar to a muddy lake. To solve some issues, there’s no point in stirring it again and again; instead we must let it be..
By learning the art to be an observer of our mind and do nothing, the disturbances (Vrittis) settle down on its own, and we get a clearer mind.
P.S: for this candid video, credit goes to my budding photographer son - junior yogi!
