“कोऽहं – Who am I?”
न मृत्युर्न शङ्का न मे जातिभेदः
No fear of death, no separation, nor bound to any caste or creed
पिता नैव मे नैव माता न जन्मः ।
Not a mother, nor a father, not even birth; I am beyond all these
न बन्धुर्न मित्रं गुरुर्नैव शिष्यं
Not a relative, nor a friend; neither a teacher, nor a disciple
चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोऽहम् शिवोऽहम् ॥५॥
I am That Ever Pure Blissful Consciousness, I am Shiv(a), I am Shiv(a).. Pure love
I grew up listening to these beautiful lines gracefully chanted by my Mother.. who not only chanted this mantra, but also explained the deeper meaning behind it’s carefully woven potent words..
You see, a mantra becomes more powerful, when we chant with a particular intonations, understand its meaning as well as experience it - by Living them.
I grew up watching both my parents Living these lines truly!
Together, they made sure to instil in us, the love towards our roots, our heritage, our scriptures and practices..
Being born in a lineage of Teachers/Acharyas, we were not only surrounded by spiritual practices, but were also given a scientific view towards why we are performing them.
Discussions connecting Precognition with the theory of Parallel Universes and Quantum Physics were common during our Chai (tea) time conversations!
Performing Yagna (holy fire), Upwas(fasting), Hast mudra, Asanas(poses), Pranayama(breath regulation) and their effects on Human body/mind as well as on the whole Cosmos; were discussed in depth on such auspicious occasions like today (Maha Shivaratri – a night of finding stillness, while staying Awakened).
So, when someone asks me, who’s my Guru? Or which Paramapara(yogic tradition) I follow? Or how many 200hr, 300hr,…certificates have I pocketed?
I just SMILE! 😊
I will always be indebted to “my first Guru – my parents” and “the Elders” of my family, for passing down their precious collective knowledge about Science and Spirituality 🙏
And lastly, to the one and only Yog(a) Guru – the Adi Guru – Shiv, from whom the science of Yog(a) originated..
May this MahaShivratri leads us nearer to the Shiva Tattva within us, helping us to answer this inevitable question..
"कोऽहं ? - who am I?"
