A truly Golden opportunity 🌳

Blessed with a beautiful spring day recently, the OTAs (Caroline and Julie) capitalised on the fine weather and took two cars loads of Tuia Lodge residents down to Balingup for a lunch and visit to the stunning Golden Valley Tree Park.

For those not in the know, it's the biggest arboretum in Western Australia - and a really beautiful spot for a day trip. After a good look around the park, we took a drive through the pine forest next door. Residents were loving the smell of pine wafting through the cars, so we kept the windows open.

Then it was off to the Mushroom Cafe for a delicious lunch of snapper, chips and salad, with every plate left clean. After that, we took a short drive up the Avenue of Honour, lined with enormous English oaks with Diggers names on plaques beneath the spreading boughs. It made us all remember that famous adage: Lest We Forget.

On the drive home, we spotted lambs and calves frolicking in the paddocks as we passed Balingup. In a sure sign of a successful day out, residents talked about the outing for days afterwards - what a wonderful trip.

A warm welcome to Iona and Kirsty 🤩

Iona Dix has joined Tuia Lodge as our new Clinical Nurse Manager (CNM).

The CNM is responsible for the overall management of clinical matters to ensure that our residents receive the very best of care. This includes liaising with residents and their representatives and a suite of allied health professionals.

Iona will also coordinate staff education opportunities so that we can provide excellent care in line with current industry guidelines. She is looking forward to meeting you all over the coming weeks. Feel free to pop in and introduce yourself to Iona and say hello.

We also extend a big hello to our new RN, Kirsty Attrill who has made the long trek over to us from the UK, thanks to a sponsorship by Hall & Prior.

World Hearing Day 👂 ⁣

World Hearing Day is held today (March 3) each year to raise awareness about how to prevent deafness and hearing loss, and promote ear and hearing care across the world. ⁣
⁣
This year's theme, “To hear for life, listen with care,” will focus on the importance and means of hearing loss prevention through safe listening, with the following key messages:⁣

✔️ It is possible to have good hearing across the life course through ear and hearing care​⁣
✔️ Many common causes of hearing loss can be prevented, including hearing loss caused by exposure to loud sounds​⁣
✔️ ‘Safe listening’ can mitigate the risk of hearing loss associated with recreational sound exposure​⁣
✔️ WHO calls upon governments, industry partners and civil society to raise awareness for and implement evidence-based standards that promote safe listening

🍰 100 reasons to say congratulations!

Tuia Lodge resident Arthur celebrated his 100th birthday recently, surrounded by well-wishers and of course a very special cake.

Arthur enjoyed tucking into some morning tea and cake with the residents, and an afternoon tea with his close friends and family. HR The Queen even popped in to say hello . . .

The day was made all the more special when Arthur's long-time friend Rachel (pictured) read his birthday card messages to him - Rachel will soon be joining 100 club herself.

UNITED NATION'S INTERNATIONAL DAY OF OLDER PERSONS 2021 + AGEISM AWARENESS DAY 💜 💜
Today is Ageism Awareness Day 2021, a day that gives us an opportunity to draw attention to the existence and impacts of ageism in Australia, which is a critical step to changing the narrative and community attitudes towards ageing. Today is also the UN’s International Day of Older Persons, this year's theme is 'Digital Equity for All Ages' a day when we look at the impact of technology on older generations across the world and work towards digital inclusion for all ages.
