Dietary fat is essential for the proper function of our bodies and comes in many forms.
However, if wishing to follow a “heart-healthy” diet, we should seek out monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats.
Foods with monounsaturated fats include avocado, nuts and oil from olives, peanuts and canola.
These unsaturated fats can help reduce the LDL (bad) cholesterol and increase the HDL (good) cholesterol.
Polyunsaturated fats lower blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels and are within omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids food.
Salmon or sardines are a source of Omega 3, as are lean meat, eggs, linseed, walnuts and soybean.
Omega 6 is found naturally in seeds and nuts such as sunflower and sesame oil or pecan, brazil and pine nuts.
At the other end of the spectrum are trans-fatty acids that are widely considered harmful to our health and are generally found in cakes and biscuits or food that is deep-fried or processed.
Slightly less harmful than trans fats are those that are saturated, but even so, we are wise to consume them sparingly.
These fats too are in cakes, pastries and processed foods, but we can also find them in fatty or processed meats and full-fat dairy products.
