Celecoxib (Celebrexยฎ)

Thinking about Celecoxib? Here's a quick rundown to help you stay informed:

๐Ÿ’Š Uses: Celecoxib is primarily used to relieve pain and inflammation. It's commonly prescribed for conditions such as:
* Osteoarthritis
* Rheumatoid Arthritis
* Ankylosing Spondylitis
* Acute Pain (e.g., after injury or surgery)
* Menstrual Cramps (Primary Dysmenorrhea)

๐Ÿ’ก How it Works: Celecoxib belongs to a class of drugs called NSAIDs (Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs), but it's a selective COX-2 inhibitor. This means it targets specific enzymes in the body responsible for pain and inflammation, potentially with a lower risk of certain gastrointestinal side effects compared to non-selective NSAIDs.

dosages can vary widely depending on the condition being treated and individual patient factors. For example:
* Osteoarthritis: Typically 200 mg once daily or 100 mg twice daily.
* Rheumatoid Arthritis: 100 mg to 200 mg twice daily.
* Acute Pain/Menstrual Cramps: An initial dose of 400 mg, followed by 200 mg if needed on the first day, then 200 mg twice daily as needed.

**It is crucial to always follow your doctor's specific instructions regarding dosage and duration of treatment.** Do not adjust your dose without medical advice.
โš ๏ธ Important Contraindications (When NOT to use): Celecoxib is not suitable for everyone. Avoid using it if you have:
* A history of allergic reactions (e.g., asthma, hives, severe allergic reactions) to sulfonamides (sulfa drugs), aspirin, or other NSAIDs.
* Severe heart disease, including recent heart attack or heart failure.
* Had recent coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.
* Active gastrointestinal bleeding or a history of stomach ulcers/bleeding.
* Severe liver or kidney disease.
* pregnancy.

Always consult your healthcare provider to discuss your full medical history and current medications before starting Celecoxib. This post is for informational purposes only and does not replace professional medical advice.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common condition affecting millions worldwide. It's characterized by the breakdown of cartilage in joints, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. While there's no cure, many over-the-counter (OTC) treatments can help manage symptoms effectively.

Here's a quick guide to common OTC options for OA:

1. Pain Relievers (Analgesics):

Paracetamol :
How it works: Reduces pain perception.
Dosage: Typically 500mg - 1000mg every 4-6 hours as needed. Maximum daily dose is usually 4000mg.
Contraindications: Severe liver disease. Caution with chronic alcohol use.
Brand examples (Australia): Panadol, , Chemist's Own Paracetamol.
2. Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs):

How they work: Reduce both pain and inflammation.
Oral NSAIDs:
Ibuprofen:
Dosage: 200mg - 400mg every 4-6 hours as needed. Maximum daily dose usually 1200mg (OTC).
Contraindications: History of stomach ulcers/bleeding, severe kidney disease, heart failure, asthma (NSAID-induced), late pregnancy.
Brand examples (Australia): Nurofen, Advil, Brufen.
Naproxen:
Dosage: 250mg - 500mg twice daily. Maximum daily dose usually 1000mg (OTC).
Contraindications: Similar to ibuprofen (stomach ulcers/bleeding, severe kidney disease, heart failure, asthma, late pregnancy).
Brand examples (Australia): Naprogesic (note: often marketed for period pain but same drug), Aleve.
Topical NSAIDs (creams/gels applied to the skin):
Diclofenac gel:
How it works: Localized pain and inflammation relief with less systemic absorption than oral NSAIDs.
Dosage: Apply 2-4 grams to the affected joint 3-4 times daily.
Contraindications: Open wounds, dermatitis, and caution with severe kidney/liver disease, and late pregnancy.
Brand examples (Australia): Voltaren Emulgel, Fenac.
Important Considerations:

Always read the label: Follow dosage instructions carefully.
Side effects: All medications can have side effects. NSAIDs, especially oral ones, can cause stomach upset, and long-term use can increase the risk of cardiovascular issues.
Consult your doctor or pharmacist: Before starting any new medication, especially if you have existing health conditions or are taking other medications. They can help determine the best and safest treatment plan for you.
Lifestyle: Regular, gentle exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and heat/cold therapy can also significantly help manage OA symptoms.
