🌞 Coping with Big Emotions on a Hot Day: Staying Safe and Cool! 🌞

Hey there, awesome people! We know that sometimes summer days can get super hot, and along with that, we may experience big emotions too! Here are some fantastic tips on how to cope with those hot feelings and stay cool while having fun in the sun! So, let's dive right in and learn together!

1️⃣ Take Slow Deep Breaths: When you feel those big emotions bubbling up like bubbles in the heat, try taking slow, deep breaths. Breathe in deeply through your nose, filling up your tummy like a balloon. Then, slowly breathe out through your mouth. This calming technique helps us feel more relaxed and in control when things get heated!

2️⃣ Find Shade and Stay Hydrated: On super hot days, it's super important to stay safe and keep our bodies cool. Look for shade under a big tree, an umbrella, or even indoors with the air conditioning. Remember to drink plenty of water to keep hydrated and cool from the inside out. A cool glass of water can help calm big emotions too!

3️⃣ Use "I" Messages: Sometimes when the temperature rises, so can our emotions. If you're feeling frustrated, angry, or overwhelmed, it's important to communicate how you feel. Use "I" messages to express your emotions in a healthy way. For example, saying "I feel overwhelmed because it's so hot outside" helps others understand what you're going through and can lead to better support.

4️⃣ Take Time for Self-Care: Self-care is always important, especially when we're dealing with big emotions. You can cool down both physically and emotionally by doing things you enjoy, like reading a cool book or playing a refreshing water game with friends. Taking time for self-care helps us re-energise and stay emotionally balanced.

5️⃣ Practice Mindfulness: Mindfulness is a superpower that helps us stay present in the moment and appreciate the world around us. Find a comfortable spot, close your eyes, and listen to the sounds of nature, like birds chirping or leaves rustling. Take a deep breath and notice any sensations you feel, like a gentle breeze brushing your skin. This will help cool both your body and your mind!

Remember, friends, it's normal to feel big emotions, especially on hot days. By using these coping strategies, you'll stay safe, cool, and in control of your emotions. Reach out to trusted grown-ups if you need extra support. Enjoy the sunny weather, make joyful memories, and keep shining like the bright summer sun! ☀️💛

Attention: Parents of Teenagers and/or anyone who has experienced DV. A new app has been released to educate teenagers on covert abuse, to help break the cycles of abuse before teenagers get into full blown relationships.

Covert abuse is two things. It’s hidden and it’s impact is psychological. Too often society thinks abuse is just physical. Like Hannah in Brisbane said to her parents “but mum, he doesn’t hit me.” Hannah and her three children were burnt to death by her husband and their father because they didn’t know about covert abuse.

The App does two things. It educates via videos what covert abuse is and has a questionnaire you can answer about your current relationship to see if covert abuse is present.

Please, as parents, educate your Teens and yourself, create open communication, and save lives. Possibly your own Teens life or the lives of other Teens as your Teens spread the word.

Face masks became mandatory from 1:00am today (Tuesday 29 June) for two weeks for those in south-east Queensland.
That is not changing so you still need to wear a mask if you leave your home for one of the four essential reasons mentioned above.
These rules will now apply for those in Townsville, Palm Island and Magnetic island from 6:00pm.
There is a $200 fine for anyone not wearing one.

⚠⚠⚠ Good afternoon Townsville, big day. Here are some crucial things you need to know about the 72-hour lockdown.

👩‍⚕️Testing:
Townsville
Townsville Hospital and Health Service will be doubling its testing capacity at 1300 Smiles Stadium – it is just going to take us 24 hours to set up an additional four lanes. Please, don’t overwhelm us today by racing out for testing. If you are sick or you have been to an exposure site, please come and please be patient. We’ll have extra capacity up and running from tomorrow. The drive-through clinic is open from 8am until 6pm. Please do not come to Townsville University Hospital’s emergency department for testing.

👩‍⚕️🌴 Magnetic Island:
The Magnetic Island Primary Care Clinic will be closed from tomorrow and will become a dedicated testing site. Extra staff will be deployed to assist with testing. Please, again don’t overwhelm our staff who will be extremely busy. If you have no symptoms please don’t rush out to be tested, we want to prioritise people who have been to potential exposure locations and people who are sick. The clinic will be open tomorrow from 8.30am until 7.30pm. If you need medical care during this time contact the local GP service.

👩‍⚕️🌴 Palm Island:
Testing is available from the Palm Island Primary Healthcare Centre from Monday to Friday 8.30am until 4.30pm. After these business hours, or on weekends, you can go to Joyce Palm Health Service for testing.

Please be mindful that we are expecting a significant increase in testing so it may take longer for us to turn around negative results. Again, please be patient. Our teams are processing tests as quickly as they can. It is important that people stay home until they get this negative result and your symptoms clear.

💉 Vaccination:
Townsville University Hospital’s vaccination clinic will remain open over the next three days; however, it will only be for booked appointments. No walk-ins will be taken.

🏠 Lockdown:
Townsville, Magnetic Island and Palm Island will enter a 72-hour lockdown from this evening. This means from 6pm tonight, the only reasons to leave home are for essential education and work that cannot be done at home, or to obtain health care services including to get your COVID-19 vaccination. You may also leave to provide care or support to a vulnerable family member, essential shopping (including groceries) in your local community or exercising with no more than one other person not from your household. You must wear a mask when you leave home.

😷 Exposure sites:
A full list of exposure sites will be updated throughout the course of the day and can be found here: www.health.qld.gov.au/tracing

If you have been to any of these locations at the relevant times you must go home immediately and quarantine, get tested at the earliest opportunity and continue to quarantine until you get a negative result.

NOTE: It should be noted that the person who visited Magnetic Island arrived via the car barge and did not enter the Townsville SeaLink terminal or leave their car until they arrived on the island.

If you are identified as a close contact, you will need to complete the full 14-day quarantine period even if you return a negative result.

📞 Our switchboard is experiencing an increase in calls. For more information visit the Queensland Health website or contact 13 COVID (13 42 68).

😷 Mask requirements across Queensland are coming into effect from 5pm today (Monday 29 March).

You must carry a face mask with you at all times when you leave home, unless you have a lawful reason not to.

You must wear a mask in indoor spaces, such as:
🛒 shopping centres, supermarkets, retail outlets and indoor markets
🏥 hospitals and aged care facilities
☕ hospitality venues such as restaurants and cafés (not required for patrons while seated; customer facing staff only)
⛪ churches and places of worship
📚 libraries
🏋️‍♂️ indoor recreational facilities and gyms (except if doing strenuous exercise)
🖥️ indoor workplaces (where safe to wear a mask and you can’t physically distance)
🚆 public transport, taxis and rideshare, including waiting areas and queues for this transport
✈️ airports and travelling on planes.

It is strongly recommended you wear a mask outdoors if you are unable to stay more than 1.5m distance from other people, such as busy walkways and thoroughfares.

👉 Masks do not need to be worn in some circumstances, including children under 12 years, where people have certain medical conditions, and in workplaces where it is not safe to do so.

You can remove your masks to consume food or drink.
