Miss ‘E’, it has been an absolute pleasure working with you and your family over the last 12 months. While I am going to miss your smile and enthusiasm for unicorns, I am so happy that your ears are healthy, and your hearing is good. Wishing you all the very best as you embark on your school years!

“Patience and perseverance are the angler’s secret tools.”

It is important for parents to understand that some days the results just don’t come. When working with children it is important to approach the session with effective engagement, time, patience, and flexibility. Even when using this approach, coupled with your best intentions, some kids just do not want to tango. It is then that we lean on true play, creativity, and imagination to build collaboration and trust. It may not be today, but we will get there!

Originally J.B came in to arrange custom hearing protection for the V8’s. Further discussion led to him disclosing the difficulties he has keeping generic earphones in place, when wearing them to stream music during recreational walks. Abracadabra, a few weeks later …

This morning the clinic is closed as we tackle our professional obligation of 'continual professional development' (CPD). The topic of tinnitus is our focus, and we venture across international boarders to collaborate and broaden our knowledge. Looking forward to sharing what we learn. Doors open and phones back on after 1:30pm. Thank you for your patience.

In today’s play audiometry session, we drew “a dinosaur, with shark teeth, as BIG as the BIGGEST crocodile, called T-Rex, and it’s got spots on its face” … we also found out D* had good hearing. Happy Friday everyone!

What is World Hearing Day?
Monday 3 March is World Hearing Day, the biggest hearing health awareness day of the year.

This year’s global theme, organised by the World Health Organization (WHO), is about changing mindsets and encouraging self-empowerment to ensure healthy ears and hearing for yourself and others. Within this broader mission, this year Audiology Australia is raising awareness of healthy hearing practices among gamers with our call to “Min-max your hearing”.

Currently, over 1 billion young people across the globe may face permanent hearing loss due to prolonged exposure to loud sounds while video gaming, listening to music and enjoying other recreational activities. This needs to change.

Take a look at what this (familiar-faced) audiologist has to say - there's no shame if you love to game!

This short video (link in comments) shares basic information about sound and how the human auditory system performs the process called hearing.

An amazing fact, that always gets my ‘inner ear-nerd’ smiling, is that as sound waves pass through the system, from the outer ear to the inner ear, there is as much as a 35dB reduction in the transmission of sound pressure due to impedance, as it passes from air to a denser medium. But wait, here is the really cool thing! The shape of the outer ear, the interaction of the ear drum, and mechanics of the three middle ear bones focuses the sound energy and transfers it into the inner ear, in a way that most of that impedance is lost, and the reduction in sound pressure is overcome – W.O.W!
