This short video (link in comments) shares basic information about sound and how the human auditory system performs the process called hearing.
An amazing fact, that always gets my ‘inner ear-nerd’ smiling, is that as sound waves pass through the system, from the outer ear to the inner ear, there is as much as a 35dB reduction in the transmission of sound pressure due to impedance, as it passes from air to a denser medium. But wait, here is the really cool thing! The shape of the outer ear, the interaction of the ear drum, and mechanics of the three middle ear bones focuses the sound energy and transfers it into the inner ear, in a way that most of that impedance is lost, and the reduction in sound pressure is overcome – W.O.W!
