World Cancer Day | 4 February

Today we recognise the strength, resilience and courage of everyone affected by cancer — patients, survivors, families and carers.

Cancer doesn’t just impact the body it affects every part of life. Early detection, timely treatment and ongoing supportive care play a vital role in improving outcomes and quality of life.

On World Cancer Day, we stand together to raise awareness, support those on their journey, and continue advocating for compassionate, evidence-based care for all. 💛

No one expects to have a fall 🤕
Keeping yourself strong and improving/maintaining your balance can help to prevent falling.

This is just a guide to help with one technique to getting off the floor.
It is recommended that you seek assistance from your healthcare provider to find the best way to get off the floor for you 👉

Step 1. Self-check
Once you have fallen, calm yourself and assess your environment.
Complete a self-check to see if you have injured any part of your body and whether you are able to get off the floor

Step 2. Getting on your side
Bring one leg up so your knee is bent.
Use this knee for momentum to assist in rolling to your side

Step 3. Getting to your hands and knees
Bend both knees and place your hands on the floor- child's pose
From here walking your hands in close and make your way onto all fours

Step 4. Crawl to a sturdy piece of furniture- eg. chair, bed
If unable to crawl bottom shuffling is also an option

Step 5. Step your strongest leg forwards
Lift one leg forwards until you are in one leg kneeling, using your arms on the furniture to assist

Step 6. Push up and sit on the chair
Using your hands and legs push up and make a half turn into a sitting posture on the chair/furniture

Falls can occur at any age. However, the risk increases as we grow older due to a range of factors 👴🧓

Mobility, balance and the brain are key factors in falls prevention. These all work together when planning movements as well things such as the body’s senses including vision providing information to the brain.

A tailored multifactored approach to falls prevention and harm minimisation is recommended. ⬇️
🟢Exercise to prevent falls: aiming for 2-3 hours of exercise per week
>For low falls risk: participation in community exercise groups for example senior’s classes
>For increased falls risk: a tailored exercise program from a physiotherapist
🟢Home safety interventions
🟢Appropriate footwear:
>Heels that are low and square to improve stability and ankle support/straps
>Easy fastening
>Firm soles
🟢Medicine review- GP or pharmacist
🟢Eye check and recommendation of eyewear specific for falls prevention including single lens distance glasses rather than bifocal
🟢Osteoporosis management
🟢Falls risk screening/assessment by a physiotherapist

As kids head back to the classroom, their school bags can put more strain on growing backs than you might think. Heavy bags, poor fit, and one strap carrying can all contribute to aches, pain, and posture issues.

✨ Backpack tips for happy spines:
✔️ Choose a lightweight bag with padded straps
✔️ Wear both straps (no one-shoulder superheroes!)
✔️ Pack only what’s needed
✔️ Make sure the bag sits snug against the back

If your child is complaining of back, neck, or shoulder pain, early support can make a big difference. Our allied health team is here to help keep kids moving, comfortable, and confident all school year long 💪🧠

📍 Book an appointment or ask us about backpack checks today!
