Todays research meme relates to saddle fit, and specifically saddle width. Sometimes it is suggested that a saddle should be fitted wider than industry guidelines and corrected with shims to allow greater ROM.

Whilst this approach may be useful in certain situations (providing there is a regular review process), it should be considered that in general, riding in a wide saddle even when using shims to correct saddle width, areas of high pressures are found in the front-mid region of the saddle which can then affect gait and epaxial muscle dimensions. Saddle fit is complex and reinforces the need to work closely with your saddle fitter, and the need for regular and correct saddle fit. 🤓

Always great to see a different perspective.

The horses lips should cushion the bit away from the palate on the top jaw and the bars on the lower jaw.
However because the lips are so prominent in most horses, they are at high risk of injury, particularly from ill fitting jointed bits.
