Post lock down life is well and truly in full swing... and it’s feeling a little too much like prelockdown life. Maybe it’s time to ease it up and reflect on our opportunity to learn from the past 2 years and make some small and important changes that incorporate some of the good that was uncovered during lockdown.

Best of luck to everyone who is helping their child/children learn from home. Make sure you take advantage of the many online support options available.

Most importantly, be kind to yourselves and each other. Pick the important battles and tasks. When this is all done, you’re connection and interaction will have the lasting impact not the “stuff” you do.

Child abuse occurs closer to home than you think. Great little quiz that may help you understand why our child services are struggling to manage the demand.

Barnardos Australia believes all children and young people deserve caring families in which they can grow safely and fulfil their potential.

I’ve heard a lot of people in my rooms express so much shame and guilt this week... so I just wanted to remind everyone that your loved ones’ weaknesses are not your failings.

Given the sudden and all encompassing shift to virtual reality it’s important that parents remain educated and aware of where their kids are ‘hanging out’, what they are doing there, and who they are doing it with.

There are loads of resources available to help you understand their world and ways to participate with them.

We will be busy ‘holidaying’ over the next week and will be back Wednesday 22/04/2020. Hoping everyone finds a way to enjoy the break... if not at least stuff your faces full of chocolate.

Here are some ideas for anyone looking for ways to keep the kids entertained (and yourselves sane):

• Virtual classes (painting, cooking, drawing, dancing, music, yoga, etc)
• live games over FaceTime, Zoom (or whatever audio visual platform you use!) : UNO, charades, guess who, monopoly, chess.
• Do treasure hunts and get your friends to complete the hunt live using face time while walking or attach to your bike.
• Netflix party: watch a show simultaneously.
• Make a movie/comic/story together. Have turns adding new sections.

Just wanted to reassure our families who are worried about accessing support during this crazy time that we can offer Telehealth options for parent and adolescent sessions.

For those who need a face to face sessions we will be incorporating super fun hand washing breaks and antiseptic wipe downs as part of our catch ups 😀

I see kids and teens every day working really hard to build their resilience to bullying, ostracism, and discrimination. However, what I am truely hopeful for is a future where 'difference' doesn't lead to this in the first place.

There is a lot of pressure to entertain children over school holidays. Sometimes, it's also important for children to learn to entertain themselves.

I hope that as we reach the end of this mid year break, families take the opportunity to reflect on the beauty of boredom, the importance of play, and the pleasure that comes from the smallest of interactions.

Thank you Abbotsford Public school for giving me the chance to speak with such an engaging group of parents last night.

We discussed the importance of being an insightful parent and understanding how your own history affects your parenting. We also looked at authoritative parenting and techniques for being consistent and adaptive to your child’s needs.

I hope everyone got something out of last night. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting you all and look forward to doing it again soon!

Treehouse was opened with the aim of helping families develop the skills necessary to tackle the current challenges they face, as well as the future challenges they will inevitably encounter. We all need a little extra support sometimes, but we aim to help our clients feel confident that they can get through it. To achieve this, we look at our clients as a whole, and utilise their personal strengths, supports, and resources available to them.

We are passionate about what we do, and have a genuine desire to help. So feel free to call or email us to discuss how we may be able to help you.
