R U OK Day

We would like to welcome our new Psychologist, Robert Rusanow. Robert will be accepting Bulk-Billing clients with a Mental Health Treatment Plan.

1. What made you get into the field that you are currently in?

Well… I’ve always found psychology really interesting… and the idea that that work could actually be something I love and be rewarding, and meaningful… and, you know, have a positive impact on others really appealed to me.

2. What are your hobbies?

Oh, well I really I like bushwalking and being out in nature. And, umm… Mountain climbing has always been a hobby of mine. I enjoy playing computer games, reading sci-fi novels, and watching sci-fi movies… I really like sci-fi!

3. What’s the best advice you were ever given and by whom?

Gosh, I actually can’t remember who told me this… But, yeah someone once pointed out to me that there are no mistakes in life, just opportunities to learn. I really agree with this! I think we just do what we can with what we have at the time… And, then, you know, it’s not helpful to judge that. Like, all we can do is learn from it and maybe do things differently next time.

4. What energizes you outside of work?

Definitely my morning coffee! But, um, I usually feel energised after doing a bit of exercise or working out… And, I usually feel pretty energised when I’m learning something new.

5. What’s your favourite holiday?

Well, I’ve holidayed in South East Asia, so Borneo, Malaysia, and Thailand… And I really loved the jungle, and the culture… ohh, and the food, and just the lifestyle is great there. Right now though… I think… I would actually like to see more of Australia.

6. What motivates you at work?

Easy! My work. So, seeing clients! I really enjoy meeting and getting to know, and supporting people who want a helping hand… Like I said, it’s a rewarding and meaningful way of work for me. So yeah… It really keeps me motivated and excited, you know.

7. How would your friends describe you?

Well, most of them think I’m a “good listener”… They seem to think I have a “gentle and calm nature” (using their words)… That I’m a bit of a “nerd”, which is very accurate… And that I’m “easy to talk to”.

8. Do you have a favourite sports team?

Ha! Actually, I don’t follow sport… I did support the “Bombers”, that’s AFL, when I was a young fella living in Victoria… But I don’t really keep up with that anymore.

9. What three items would you take with you to a deserted island?

Tough! This would probably change every time you ask me… But right now… I think I would want a friend to hang out with, a hammock… well can I have two? One for me and one for my friend? Ohh, and music for sure!

10. If you could choose a superpower, what would it be and why?

Okay… Well, um… Just to see the truth of things and be okay with it, you know. I think that would be really helpful and make for a happy life… maybe, haha, it could back fire though I suppose.

Do you identify with any of the mentioned characteristics?
Burnout is commonly spoken of in the context of work and study, however quite rarely if ever, in the context of parenting. Parental burnout is a common struggle many parents of young families experience, and if left unaddressed can lead to more complex relationship conflicts and in some cases, resentment.

Speak to one of our experienced mental health clinicians today, and get ahead of burnout!
