Abandonment starts way before anyone actually walks away.
As kids, we rely on our caregivers for love, safety, and a sense of belonging. When those needs arenât metâwhether through neglect, criticism, or absenceâwe begin to feel like parts of ourselves arenât safe.
Since leaving our caregivers isnât an option as children, we end up leaving ourselves behind instead. We silence, shrink, or hide who we really are just to keep the connection alive.
Over time, this becomes a survival strategy:
