OBSTETRIC A**L SPHINCTER INJURIES (OASI) awareness month - January 2026.
I left it till the last minute but better late than never.
Also known as 3rd and 4th degree perineal tears, these tears that happen at the time of birth can have a significant impact early postnatal, and long term. They happen in about 5% of first vaginal births, but a good repair and following through with rehab with a pelvic health physio can make a big difference in outcomes.
Can you prevent a 3rd or 4th degree tear? Yes. It is possible to mitigate the risk of these tears. Seeing a pelvic health physio in pregnancy to learn techniques to prepare your pelvic floor for birth can certainly help.
