This midwife and her family are hitting the road! 🗺️🚘

From the end of June, Nurturing Village Midwifery will be closed as I take a year off to caravan around Australia with my family.

I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support - I have absolutely loved being part of your pregnancy and birth journeys 💜

I look forward to rejoining our beautiful Central West community mid 2026!

The first eight weeks of pregnancy are a time of rapid and amazing transformation. Though still tiny, your baby is growing at an incredible rate!

Here’s what’s happening inside:
🌟 Weeks 1-2: Your body is preparing for pregnancy, and ovulation occurs. If fertilisation happens, a brand-new life begins to develop!
🌟 Weeks 3-4: The fertilised egg implants into the uterus, and the placenta starts forming. Your baby is now called an embryo, and the neural tube (which will become the brain and spinal cord) begins developing.
🌟 Weeks 5-6: The heart starts beating 💓 and tiny buds for arms and legs appear. Major organs like the liver and kidneys begin forming.
🌟 Weeks 7-8: Facial features become more defined, fingers and toes start developing, and little movements begin (though too small for you to feel just yet!). Your baby is now about the size of a raspberry! 🍓

This early stage is so crucial for your baby’s growth and development. A healthy diet, rest, and good prenatal care make all the difference 💕

A big thank you to Young Hospital, who were recently so welcoming when, on very short notice, they welcomed Nikki & Dayne in their birth of Lydia along with Nurturing Village Midwifery as a doula to support.

The staff went above and beyond to accommodate birthing preferences and create a beautiful birthing space, which even included battery-operated tealight candles ✨

We’re so grateful to the midwives and doctor for welcoming woman, husband and doula 🙏

“Kathryn's support and guidance throughout my last two pregnancies, births and postpartum was invaluable. Her kind, calm nature made our experience just perfect - we will be forever grateful for Kathryn's skill, passion for her profession and her unwavering belief in our ability to birth our baby. Birthing at home, in the comfort of our space, with our whole family, is a memory that I will cherish forever - the most beautiful welcome for our newest little person.”

Another reason I love the continuity of care model! 💫

I often hear that birth support partners feel a little lost in the pregnancy journey and unsure about their role in the birth space. Working with couples throughout pregnancy allows me to get to know not only the woman, but her partner too and answer any questions they have. We’re then able to bring that relationship and the confidence of knowledge with us into the birth space.

Thanks, Mitch, for sharing your experience!

How a doula supports you & your birth partner throughout your pregnancy and birth ⬇️⬇️

1️⃣ A doula provides emotional and physical support during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. I’ll be a known and trusted face during labour, providing you with an option for continuity of care if you pair antenatal care with doula support.
2️⃣ A doula is your advocate in the birthing space. As an added bonus for you, I’m an endorsed midwife who has worked in the local hospital system, so I’ve got an added that extra layer of insight & knowledge!
3️⃣ Reduced labour interventions - studies show that having a doula reduces the likelihood of interventions such as C-sections and epidurals (Reference: Continuous Support for Women During Childbirth by Bohren et al., which analysed data from over 15,000 women).
4️⃣ With a doula’s support, labour can be more efficient and shorter in duration (Reference: Continuous Support for Women During Childbirth by Bohren et al.).
5️⃣ Doulas provide evidence-based information, ensuring you make informed decisions. Resource-sharing and discussions are one of my favourite bits of doula-ing!
6️⃣ Doulas empower partners, giving them guidance and confidence to provide support during labour.
7️⃣ Doulas offer non-medical pain relief methods like massage, breathing techniques, and positioning during labour.

An initial “Meet & Greet” between Woman and Midwife is free of charge and provides a great opportunity to answer all your questions regarding Doula Support in a face-to-face setting. DM me to set one up!

When you choose Nurturing Village Midwifery for your antenatal care, one of the things we will cover is your Birth Preferences.

This is where we go through your wishes for your birth and what options you have throughout different possibilities in labour & birthing your baby.

I find that empowerment comes from not only having preferences recorded but from exploring and becoming educated on all options 💪💪

So many amazing discussions and resource sharing come from this part of your antenatal care!

Why do expecting mothers nest? 🏡✨🤰

If you're pregnant and suddenly feel an urge to clean, organise, or redecorate every corner of your home, you're not alone—you're nesting! This instinct is completely natural and often kicks in during the later stages of pregnancy.

Here’s why it happens:
💜 Biological instinct - just like birds building a nest, it's your body’s way of preparing a safe, cosy environment for your baby.
💜 Emotional preparation - organising and tidying up helps you feel more in control and ready for this exciting new chapter.
💜 Practical readiness - from washing baby clothes to setting up the nursery, nesting helps ensure everything is in place for your little one’s arrival.

Remember, while nesting can be energising and productive, don’t overdo it! Listen to your body, rest when needed, and let loved ones help.
