🎄✨ Holiday Closure Announcement ✨🎄

Does anyone else feel like this time of year can be one of the most exciting and happy times of year whilst also feeling like you want to pull your hair out? 😵‍💫

Burnout and this extreme feeling of exhaustion can make everything feel impossible and miserable. Remember to go easy on yourself. It’s okay to take a breath, set boundaries, and let yourself rest. This feeling will pass—probably faster than your Aunt Betty’s 12-hour slideshow of her holiday in Tuscany.

We’re taking our own advice and recharging our batteries too!! Mind Cookie Psychology will be closed from Friday, 20th December 2024 and will reopen on Monday, 6th January 2025.

We know this time of year can be hard, but you’re not alone. Take care, and we’ll be back in the new year, ready to support you. 🌟

Happy holidays from all of us at Mind Cookie Psychology!

A sentence that can make even the most experienced psych’s blood run cold as we wait to hear what ‘exact’ piece of advice we had given and what the outcome was.

Despite popular belief, we act more as a sherpa than a sage. Psychologists are all about the climb, not the view from the top!

Our job is to skill you up, help you practice, problem solving, create new paths, see different views, grow and strengthen. We are here to guide the process and help you tackle your next mountain.

Embrace the power of overthinking! 💡

It feels weird to say, but sometimes that anxious energy needs an outlet. Maybe you need to find a solution to something to satisfy your anxiety. Brains are weird! In a good way.

Sometimes letting our minds wander can lead to innovative and creative breakthroughs. Don’t be afraid to explore the depths of your thoughts. Also have some fun with it….. consider the weird and wonderful things around us, bulk up your trivia knowledge, explore the random things that keep you awake….

Always remember, know when to gently guide your mind back from overthinking is key to maintaining balance and peace of mind. Set time limits, vent and debrief with others, have a recharge activity ready to go.

Let’s talk ALEXITHYMIA 💭

Characterised by difficulty identifying and expressing emotions, it can be a feature of neurodivergence, but we also see it in PTSD, depression and organic disorders, amongst others.

And as you would imagine not being able to identify or name an emotio, adds an extra layer of unique challenges to therapy.
With education, coping strategies, skills and practice, alexithymia itself is manageable.

In the therapeutic context we also have the advantage that we can roll with however you want to describe an emotion - because emotions are personal and subjective.

If a certain type of emotion is “spikey” or represented by a colour, a tv character, whatever works at the time … that’s a start… and over time we can hone those skills.

Boundaries: Because “I’d rather not” is a full sentence.

Looking after yourself and self-care isn’t always bubble baths and face masks. It can be about protecting your peace, your sanity and your emotional resources.

Communication is key here. People aren’t mind readers, not even psychologists (contrary to Hollywood). Boundaries can be fluid, flexible and situational, so talking about them is important. Knowing, setting, communicating and protecting your boundaries are necessary for everyone - not just the introverts.

Love may not always be in the air in the traditional sense for neurospicy people. If you are neurodiverse yourself, or are the emotional support human for a neurodiverse person, here is a quick guide on how expression of affection, love and acceptance may look.

INFO DUMPING: Ever been regaled with a riveting lecture on the history of paperclips or the mating habits of tardigrades? Congratulations, you've experienced the phenomenon known as info dumping! When your neurodivergent person gets on a roll, sit back, relax, and prepare to become an unwitting expert on the most obscure topics.

PARELLEL PLAY: Who says you need constant chatter to enjoy each other's company? Neurodivergent pals excel at parallel play, effortlessly engaging in separate activities while still basking in the warm glow of companionship. It's like having a silent disco for the soul.

SUPPORT SWAPPING: For some reason, neurodivergent people can go the extra mile for a friend in any activity you can name but struggle to do it for themselves. A nice little work around is trading tasks. If you love making phone calls for appointments but struggle to tidy the dining room table - swap tasks with a friend (this can also be helped with Body Doubling - simply having a friend be present while you do tasks).

CRUSH MY SOUL BACK INTO MY BODY: Feeling overwhelmed? Enter the realm of deep pressure therapy, where hugs aren't just hugs—they're cozy cocoons of comfort that cocoon you in a blanket of calm. Whether it's a bear hug or a weighted blanket snuggle, neurodivergent buddies know just how to apply the perfect amount of pressure to soothe your soul.

PENGUIN PEBBLING: Picture this: you're strolling along a sandy beach, waves crashing, seagulls serenading, when suddenly, you spot it—a rock so perfectly imperfect, it practically sings your name. That, my friends, is the neurodivergent approach to gift giving summed up in four simple words: "I found the perfect rock.”.

This is just a quick glimpse into the wonderfully quirky world of neurodivergent love languages. Embrace the eccentricities and cherish the idiosyncrasies.

Today we wanted to commend each and every client that allows us to share their journey. We acknowledge the huge privilege it is to be trusted by clients to sit with them in some of the biggest and toughest times.

One thing we have admired, in addition to strength, is the HUMOUR. Clients have given us some of the biggest laughs amidst some of the hardest conversations. The resilience, strength, perspective and vulnerability is always inspiring.

With clients individual permission, we have decided to start sharing some of these moments. Therapy can be tough, but there are lighter moments, growth moments, gossip moments and sometimes straight up unhinged. And we are here for the whole ride.
