Liza Twohill brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her patients. Liza has a long association with complementary medicine and is passionate about finding the underlying problem to a patient's health issues, rather than looking for a quick fix. As a child, Liza's family embarked on a journey using both western medicine and naturopathic medicine to assist her father with a life altering health problem. This gave her an insight into how both medicines can work together to resolve chronic health problems and an appreciation of the importance of a healthy diet and balanced lifestyle in providing the right environment to allow the body to heal. Liza has a Bachelor of Health Science in Complementary Medicine and Advanced Diploma qualifications in Naturopathy, Herbal Medicine, Homeopathy and Nutrition. She has a passion for learning and regularly attends training and international conferences to extend her knowledge and keep abreast of current trends. As a nutritionist and naturopath, Liza is among a growing body of health professionals determined to understand the complex web of chronic health problems and work together to bring a more holistic, individualized and self empowering approach to medicine. Liza has worked in the health sector since 1995 and brings a wealth of knowledge understanding and practicality to her patients. She is known for her determination to get to the bottom of a problem and is clear about her role to empower, educate and facilitate each person through their health journey. I don’t love mushrooms but I use them in both food and supplements.

Medicinal mushrooms like reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), shiitake (Lentinula edodes), and turkey tail (Trametes versicolor) are some of the most researched when it comes to immune and gut health.

They’re rich in β-glucans compounds that activate immune cells like macrophages, T-cells and natural killer cells, supporting the body's natural defences (Ayeka, 2018; Xu et al., 2014).

They also:
- Feed beneficial gut bacteria with prebiotic fibres
- Offer cellular protection through antioxidants like ergothioneine
- Support brain and nerve function lion’s mane has been studied for its potential to promote nerve regeneration
- Help balance the immune system reducing inflammatory cytokines and increasing regulatory pathways (Jin et al., 2016; Suzuki et al., 2013)

You’ll find these mushrooms in some of my favourite immune support supplements, especially in winter or during recovery from illness.

Did today feel like a struggle? Does caring about your work or home life feel like a total waste of energy? Are you exhausted all the time? Do you feel like nothing you do makes a difference or is appreciate?

You might be experiencing burnout :(

Most of us have days when we feel helpless, overloaded, or unappreciated— when dragging ourselves out of bed requires the determination of Hercules. If you feel like this most of the time, however, you may be burned out. Burnout is a gradual process. It doesn’t happen overnight, but it can creep up on you. The signs and symptoms are subtle at first, but become worse as time goes on. Think of the early symptoms as red flags that something is wrong that needs to be addressed. If you pay attention and actively reduce your stress, you can prevent a major breakdown.

There's so many things we can do to help when you're feeling burnt out. I am currently a part of a research study to investigate the use of certain supplements on burnout.

Have you gone back to work this month after the Christmas holiday break and feeling down? Did having a break and finally getting a rest leave you feeling like maybe your work isn't that fulfilling?

You might be experiencing burnout. This is when you are in a state of emotional, physical and mental exhaustion, caused by excessive and prolonged stress. You then might start to lose interest and motivation in doing the things you might normally love. This can spill out into all areas of your life and make you more vulnerable to physical illness too.

It doesn't have to stay that way! There are many things we can do to help to bring back the you that is energetic and ready for work and enjoying your life again. One of the ways we do that is with nutritional and botanical supplements.

I am currently a part of a research study to investigate the use of certain supplements on burnout.
