Yesterday we welcomed Assistant Minister Emma McBride to headspace Dubbo.

She spent time with our team and heard about the work we’re doing with young people across Dubbo and the surrounding communities we support.

It was a great chance to share local voices and highlight the importance of youth mental health in our region.

Last week we were lucky enough to be involved at three R U OK? Day events all in one day – Delroy, South, and Coonamble schools 🎉

We chatted with heaps of young people about one simple but important thing: what helps when you’re not feeling okay? 💬

The answers were real, honest, and a good reminder that we all have different ways to look after ourselves and each other.

Thanks to the schools for having us and everyone who stopped for a convo – check out the video for a glimpse 👇

A good friendship does more than fill our cup, it nurtures our brain too. 🧠

Social activity impacts all areas of our health and happiness. Socialising can help slow the impacts of ageing and reduce cognitive decline. It also helps to prevent many diseases, like heart disease.

So, spread your social butterfly wings and get out there. 🦋

Here are some things to try:
❤️ reconnect with family or friends that you’ve lost touch with over the years
🤝 volunteer within your community
🧠 learn something new in a group setting
👟 take up a fitness class or physical activity
🐶 get a pet
💌 if you can’t get out, use other ways to connect with friends and family like a video chat or an email.

Today is World Su***de Prevention Day.

It’s a day to honour the memories of those we’ve lost to su***de and to offer support to those facing difficult times and those living with the grief of losing someone.

The message of ‘Changing the Narrative on Su***de’ encourages us to change how we talk about su***de. To replace silence and stigma for empathy, compassion and action.

We all have a role to play in staying connected, showing up for those we care about and helping those struggling access the support they need.

Show the people around you that you’re there for them by asking 'are you OK?'. Because a conversation could change a life.

👀 Just because you can’t see the signs, doesn’t mean they’re not there.

Check in regularly, so the people in your world know they don't have to pretend to be OK.

Before you reach for that extra drink, ask yourself: is one more worth it? 🤔

Instead of adding to the night's fun, you could be cracking open a splitting headache, with a hangover leaving you feeling tired and irritable.

Alcohol can also mess with your mood, memory, sleep, energy, and overall health.

Here's some ways to make sure you don't overdo it:
🍷 Drink slowly and know your limit.
💦 Alternate alcohol with water.
🍽️ Eat before and while drinking.

The alcohol guidelines recommend no more than 4 standard drinks on any one day and no more than 10 standard drinks in a week.

If you or a loved one need support with alcohol, Adis 24/7 Alcohol and Drug Support offers free and confidential information and support. Call 1800 177 833 or chat online (8am to 10pm) via their website 👉 https://adis.health.qld.gov.au
