Today on National Sorry Day, we pause to listen, reflect, and stand in solidarity with First Nations peoples and communities. 🖤💛❤️

At headspace, our commitment to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people is grounded in deep respect for the strength, resilience, and rich cultures that have shaped this land for generations.

This year’s theme, 'From Sorry to Action', is a powerful reminder that acknowledgement is only the first step. True healing requires us to back our empathy with real, tangible change. While saying 'sorry' shows vital compassion, it is our collective actions that will deliver justice and equity.

We cannot wait for the future to fix the past; the time to move beyond words is right now. We invite our entire community to mark this day by committing to ongoing truth-telling, deep listening, and active allyship alongside First Nations communities.

🌿 What is one action you can take today to support truth and healing?

Adjusting to changes in routine, battling sleepless nights, adapting to a new role or identity and juggling life with parenting are all common experiences when looking after a newborn.

Most new parents need a bit of extra support, like a listening ear or practical help, from family and friends. For more tips on supporting new parents, visit ruok.org.au/tips-to-support-new-parents

Traumatic events and experiences can take many forms and understanding the impact of them can help family better support young people and respond with care and compassion.

1️⃣ Acute/Single Incident trauma can be experienced after a single, overwhelming traumatic event such as a car accident. Even one experience can have a lasting impact on how a young person thinks, feels, or responds to the world around them.

2️⃣Complex trauma can develop when a young person is exposed to stressful and traumatic experiences over a long period of time. These experiences can build up and affect their sense of safety, relationships, and wellbeing.

3️⃣Vicarious trauma can occur when someone is deeply affected by witnessing or hearing about distressing experiences happening to others, especially those they know, care about, or feel connected to.

4️⃣Intergenerational trauma refers to trauma that can be passed down through families or communities across generations, often linked to histories of injustice, displacement, colonisation or cultural loss.

Every young person’s experience of trauma is different. Taking time to listen and respond with understanding can help them feel supported and less alone. 💚
