Only 7.5% of Australian adults eat the recommended 5 serves of vegetables a day! A serve is 1/2 cup of cooked vegetables, 1 cup of salad vegetables, or 1/2 cup of lovely legumes (chickpeas, kidney beans, lentils etc). Leaving dinner to do the heavy lifting makes it hard to meet your 5 serves. Try having veggies with your snacks. My favourite veggie snack is chickpea dip with carrot sticks 😋 How do you get your 5 a day?

Eating more veg is one of the easiest things you can do for better health and wellbeing. Yet only 7.5% of Australians eat the recommended 5 serves a day.

Here are our 3 easy tips for getting more veg in your life:
• Add veg to your snack times. Don’t wait for main meals. Veggies can make a great snack. Try carrot sticks and chickpea hummus, zucchini fritters or avocado on wholegrain toast.
• Fill the fridge. Keep your fridge stocked with veg to make it easier to load up on the good stuff. Bonus points for chopping your veg and storing in containers in the fridge for easy snacking and cooking.
• Don’t forget your legumes. Legumes such as beans, lentils and chickpeas count towards your 5 veg serves for the day. Add them to tacos, mix into your Bolognese, or bulk up your salad.

Beautiful blueberries - rich in phytochemicals such as anthocyanin and polyphenols – the anthocyanin gives the blueberries their stunning colour.
These have strong antioxidant properties and have wide ranging health benefits including:
• Reducing DNA damage which could reduce your risk of cancer
• Protect your heart by reducing oxidation of bad cholesterol LDL and reducing blood pressure
• Reducing cognitive decline in ageing
And of course, they are yummy to eat. Toss some on your cereal, add to your yoghurt or just snack on a handful

In my early days as a dietitian, I used to insist my weight loss clients ate breakfast. There was evidence that those who ate breakfast weighed less than those who didn't. I now suspect that evidence came from Mr Kellogg et al!
So if you are healthy, not on any medications that require you to eat and aren't hungry in the mornings there is no need to force yourself to have breakfast. On the other hand, if you are hungry then make good choices like whole-grain toast with eggs or peanut butter, oatmeal or yoghurt with berries, not muffins or sugary cereals.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day—or is it?

Ever stood in the supermarket looking at different yoghurts or cereals and been confused about which is the healthiest choice? Check out the FoodSwitch app -available for android or iOS. Great app that takes the guesswork out of choosing the healthiest option for you.
Simply open the app, scan that yoghurt or cereal barcode and FoodSwitch will tell you if there is a healthier option. You can select use FoodSwitch classic for general healthy eating or use one of the filters to target a specific health need like salt or gluten. Happy shopping 😀

As the days get colder spicy curries become my go to and turmeric features in my favourite recipe. That beautiful yellow colour comes from the curcumin in the turmeric. But what else does that fabulous curcumin do? Know as an anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory it has helped with arthritis, depression, diabetes and weight loss in some animal and human studies. Whilst the evidence is not yet strong and turmeric itself is poorly absorbed by the body there can be no harm (and potentially good) in adding some to your cooking. Or maybe even have a turmeric latte - enjoy 😋

There's a reason everyone's talking about turmeric. Scientific research links its active component curcumin to reduced inflammation that may affect weight loss and disease treatment. Here's a detailed overview of its uses, the best dosage, the benefits an

Do you want to know a secret to longevity?
High fibre vegetable-rich meals.
As we in the southern hemisphere head into winter why not cook up some warming vegetable soups, curries or stews.
Or for those in the northern hemisphere prepare some colourful salads or veggie stir-fries.

If people ate well and exercised, hospitals would be 80 per cent empty. This may sound bold, but I have spent my career researching the impact of how we treat our bodies on the incidence of the most common chronic diseases. I have found that despite a view of diseases as suddenly cropping up, they o...
