It's always exciting when a therapy in clinical trials receives Breakthrough Therapy designation from the FDA, especially in the melanoma space! Breakthrough Therapy designation is a process designed to expedite the development and review of drugs, so that they can eventually be FDA approved for use.
An emerging therapy in melanoma just recently received this designation, supported by significant efficacy and safety data. The IGNYTE study is testing an oncolytic virus, called RP1, in combination with nivolumab in patients with advanced melanoma who have received prior treatment. The IGNYTE study has shown promise for advanced melanoma post-PD1 inhibitor therapy, with a 32.7% overall response rate.
The confirmatory phase 3 IGNYTE-3 trial (NCT06264180) is still currently enrolling, evaluating RP1 plus nivolumab in patients with advanced melanoma who have progressed on PD-1- and CTLA-4–directed therapy or who are not eligible for CTLA-4–directed therapy.
