🌋 Anger Volcanoes, Emotional Regulation & Co-Regulation 🌋
Ever seen your child go from calm to explosive in seconds?
That’s their anger volcano erupting!
Just like a real volcano, anger builds up pressure inside the body(sometimes from things we can’t see), until even a small trigger causes a meltdown. 💥
What’s really happening?
Often, it's the result of interoception (our ability to sense what’s going on inside our bodies) being overwhelmed or underdeveloped. Kids may not realise their heart is racing, they’re hungry, tired, or overstimulated.
This is where tools like body scans come in handy. A simple check-in like H.A.L.T.T. (Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired, Toilet) helps children learn to tune into their inner world.
💬 Behaviour is communication.
When a child is melting down, they’re not being “naughty”, they’re struggling with emotional regulation, which is a learned skill. It takes time, practice, and most importantly, support from a regulated adult.
This is where Co-Regulation comes in. When their world feels like chaos, your calm can be their anchor.
Yelling won’t help; it often leads to more resistance, more tears, or shutdown.
You might be wondering, “But how do I co-regulate?”
Here are a few tips:
✅ Get down to their level
✅ Use open, non-threatening body language
✅ Soften your voice and tone
✅ Acknowledge their big feelings without judgment
✅ Guide them gently through a body scan like H.A.L.T.T.
✅ Offer calming strategies you’ve practiced together
❤️🧠 Emotional regulation is a journey, not a destination—and it starts with connection.
