Active kids love playing sports, but sudden increases in exercise can lead to injuries like Osgood-Schlatter disease. This condition, common in growing teens aged 12-16, causes pain and swelling just below the knee, where the patellar tendon attaches to the upper shinbone (tibia). The tension from activities like running and jumping can stress the growing bone, leading to discomfort and irritation.
Symptoms include swelling and pain below the knee, pain when straightening or squatting, swollen tibial tuberosity and weak quadriceps.
Causes include:
➡ Increased physical activity
➡ Poor foot mechanics (such as flat feet)
➡ Previous knee injury
While Osgood-Schlatter often resolves once the growth spurt is over, a podiatrist can help diagnose the condition and provide relief. Treatment may include rest, modifying activities, orthotics for foot imbalances, physical therapy, and pain management.
