Are your vaccinations up to date? (Yours and your family's?)

It's one of those things that's easy to let slip — a missed childhood booster, an adult vaccine you didn't realise you were due for, or travel plans that suddenly need a Yellow Fever certificate. Life gets busy, and immunisation schedules don't always stay top of mind.

Here's what a lot of people don't realise: catch-ups aren't just for kids. Adults can fall behind too — whether it's a whooping cough booster before a new grandchild arrives, a shingles vaccine after turning 50, or updating your flu and COVID-19 protection ahead of winter.

And if you're planning a trip overseas? Travel vaccines can be surprisingly complex depending on your destination. It's worth having that conversation with your GP well before you fly, not the week before.

At Earlwood Medical Centre, we carry a comprehensive range of vaccines — from the standard childhood immunisation schedule, to adult boosters for chronic disease patients and elderly patients, to travel-specific vaccinations including Yellow Fever.

Your GP can review your immunisation history, identify any gaps, and map out what's needed — whether that's one catch-up appointment or a staged plan before travel.

No referral needed. Just book an immunisation appointment with your GP and bring along any vaccination records you have (your MyGov immunisation history statement is a great starting point).

MYTH: "Private medical practices are too expensive — I'll always pay more than at a bulk billing clinic."

FACT: Many private practices, including ours, operate under mixed billing. That means a large number of patients are still bulk billed — including children aged 15 and under, concession card holders, and DVA card holders. If you've been a regular patient with your GP, there's a good chance your routine consultations are already covered.

So what does "mixed billing" actually mean for you? It means the practice can invest in longer appointment times, a wider range of on-site services, and continuity with a doctor who knows your history — while still keeping care accessible for those who need it most.

The gap fee that some patients pay isn't a premium for the sake of it. It reflects the reality that Medicare rebates haven't kept pace with the cost of delivering thorough, unhurried care. That small investment often means you're not being squeezed into a 6-minute slot — your GP has the time to actually listen, investigate, and follow up properly.

Before assuming a private practice is out of reach, it's worth asking the team about your individual billing. You might be surprised.

Bio-remodelling is a treatment approach designed to support your skin's own hydration, elasticity, and structure — so it can feel more like itself again.
No filler. No freeze. Just your skin, supported.

We're now offering bio-remodelling consultations at Sydney Cosmedic. If you've been curious about what options are out there for improving skin quality — not just covering it up — this is a great place to start.

Getting older doesn't mean getting less attention — it means deserving more of it.

Dr Shahzadi Nadia is a Consultant Geriatrician seeing patients at our Excelsia Specialist Centre, Earlwood on Fridays. She focuses on the things that matter most to older adults and their families: staying independent, preventing falls, managing conditions like osteoporosis and dementia, and navigating the emotional side of ageing, including depression.

What stands out about Dr Nadia is her approach — she looks at the whole person, not just a list of symptoms. She's trained across hospital and community settings, and brings a warmth to her consultations that puts both patients and their loved ones at ease.

She also speaks Pashto, Urdu and Hindi, so if English isn't your first language, she may be able to connect with you in yours.

If you have a parent or family member who could benefit from specialist geriatric care close to home, a referral from your GP is all you need to get started.

WEDNESDAY SPECIALIST SPOTLIGHT

Blood tests can raise questions that aren’t always easy to interpret on their own. This week we’re introducing Dr Qin Liu, Haematologist at SMSG.

Dr Liu commonly assists patients with iron deficiency, anaemia, abnormal blood counts, clotting concerns, and further investigation of unexpected results found on routine testing. Many referrals begin with something subtle — a slightly abnormal result, ongoing fatigue, or values that don’t quite make sense in isolation.

Haematology is often less visible as a specialty, but it plays a key role in understanding what’s happening beneath the surface. Dr Liu looks at blood results in context — connecting patterns, trends and clinical history to determine whether findings require monitoring, treatment, or further investigation.

During appointments, patients often notice her clear and methodical approach. Results are explained in a way that’s easy to follow, with a focus on what is clinically significant and what can be safely observed.

For many patients, the outcome is not just answers — but reassurance and a clear plan forward.

Appointments with Dr Qin Liu are available.

This week, we’re recognising Dr Alexander Lewis, who has been caring for the local community for over 30 years.

Dr Lewis continues to support his long-standing patients with the same consistency and dedication that has defined his practice over decades. His focus remains on continuity of care and maintaining strong, trusted relationships with those he has looked after over time.

He is currently seeing his regular patients. For any new or additional appointments, our reception team can assist in arranging care with another GP within the practice.

Health concerns don’t always exist in isolation — especially as we get older. This week we’re introducing Dr Seo Ling, General Medicine Physician and Geriatrician at SMSG.

Dr Ling commonly assists patients with multiple chronic conditions, medication complexity, cognitive concerns, and changes in mobility or function. Many referrals come at a point where care feels fragmented — with different issues, medications or opinions needing to be brought together into one clear plan.

What makes his role unique is the ability to step back and look at the whole picture. As both a General Physician and Geriatrician, Dr Ling considers how medical conditions, medications, cognition, independence and supports at home all interact — not just individually, but together.

Importantly, as a specialist physician, Dr Ling offers bulk billing for the first 2 visits per referrla & can facilitate access to fully bulk billed MRI imaging (where clinically appropriate) — something that is often not available through GP referrals alone. This can help streamline investigations and reduce barriers when more detailed imaging is needed.

During appointments, patients and families often notice his calm, structured approach. He takes time to understand the full context, explain findings clearly, and outline practical next steps that feel manageable and coordinated.

For many families, these consultations provide something simple but important — clarity.

Appointments with Dr Seo Ling are available.
