While it's tempting to base your success on the number you see on the scales, this isn't always the most accurate - or motivational - way to measure your progress. Generally in the first year after surgery it is important to weigh yourself only once a week. Time spent focusing on developing healthy lifestyle habits is more important than the number on the scales.

It's also important to look out for the other positive wins, such as:

- You've gone down in clothing sizes. And clothes in general are fitting better!
- Your energy & fitness levels have increased. You can walk further, exercise for longer, or keep up with the kids.
- Your mindset around food has changed.

What other non-scale victories have you celebrated?

Body mass index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to adult men and women. This is a commonly used tool for bariatric surgeons to help determine if weight loss surgery will be beneficial.

BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared - but there are plenty of calculators online if maths isn't your strong suit!

We know that weight loss surgery reduces the amount of food a patient can consume, but it can come as a surprise to some people that it also impacts liquids too. This is important to consider, as optimal hydration can help with recovery & eliminating waste.

Staying hydrated after bariatric surgery doesn't mean gulping down a large glass of water, as this can lead to nausea. Instead, we recommend gradually sipping on water throughout the day to maintain adequate hydration levels. Take a drink bottle with you wherever you go, and don't wait until you're thirsty to drink.

Struggling with plain water? Mix up the flavour or temperature to find what works for you.

Call (02) 4380 8404 and chat to our friendly team if you're finding it hard to stay hydrated.

Weight loss surgery is known to increase fertility for women, as it can help to normalise hormones and better the quality of eggs a woman produces.

However, we recommend waiting at least 12 months after weight loss surgery before trying to conceive. This gives your body time to lose excess weight and allows for adequate maternal nutrition. After this period, it's perfectly safe to fall pregnant!

Gastric bypass and gastric sleeve are two of the most popular & commonly performed weight loss surgeries, but how do they differ?

With a gastric bypass (also called Roux-en-Y), a small stomach pouch is created to limit how much you can eat. The small intestine is then sewn to the pouch “bypassing” most of your stomach and the first part of your small intestine.

However, gastric sleeve surgery is often the first choice for patients due to excellent outcomes & the lowest complication rates. In this procedure, Dr Hamer permanently removes about 80 percent of the patient’s stomach, leaving behind a small stomach pouch the shape of a shirt sleeve.

There are pros and cons for each option, so please contact our team to learn more.

It's important to get up & start moving as soon as you can after weight loss surgery. This will help reduce the risk of blood clots and can help you get rid of trapped wind, which can be a side effect after surgery. You may be back in the gym as soon as 1 month after your surgery.

We recommend gentle walking for the first two weeks or so, and after gaining permission from your doctor, you should be able to gently increase your activity levels.
