This stage of life is when you officially haven’t had a period for over 12 months and you will stay in the post-menopausal state for the remainder of your life.
Some of the more frustrating symptoms you have been experiencing (like the lovely hot flashes) may decrease – this may not always be the case. Interruptions to your sleep, vaginal dryness and mood changes might still show themselves from time to time. If you continue to struggle with your symptoms, checking in with a GP may be a great place to start. Dr Anna and Dr Emily I are always available for a discussion.
With this post-menopausal state, there can also be other things to keep an eye on. Such as increased risk of cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis, due to the drop in estrogen levels.
Keep up with calcium intake and vitamin D, for your bone health. Maintain a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet, cutting back on your intake of alcohol and steering clear of smoking can assist with the symptoms. Keeping in touch with your GP or healthcare professional is always a good idea. Let us know if you need assistance, Dr Emily I and Dr Anna C are available and ready to help!

Menopause, The big ‘M’, the change, the pause – whatever you know it as, it marks the end of your fertile years and your last period (yay).

In Australia, most women will notice they have entered menopause in their early – mid 50’s, but will depend from person to person.

You will be considered ‘menopausal’ when your period has stopped and you have not had a cycle for 12 consecutive months.

Symptoms you may experience are:
• Hot flashes/night sweats
• Mood changes and irritability
• Vaginal dryness
• Dry skin and eyes
• Brain fog
• Urinary issues – urgency, frequency or incontinence
• Breast tenderness

Unfortunately, these are only some of the things you may experience and others may pop up over time.

Lifestyle changes like eating a well-balanced diet, staying hydrated and regular exercise can help alleviate some of the symptoms you feel.

If you’re really feeling it, and it is starting to affect your day to day, it might be time to think about HRT (hormone replacement therapy). HRT does come with its risks, but can greatly reduce the symptoms of menopause. An in-depth discussion with your health care professional is a great place to start before heading down the HRT path. Dr Emily I and Dr Anna have spaces available to talk all things menopause and would be happy to help! Call the rooms on, 6343 0999 to make a suitable time.

Perimenopause kicks in as your ovaries begin to produce less estrogen. Typically somewhere in your late 30 though to mid 50’s is where you will start to notice these changes. This is a transitional phase, when you period continues to occur each month and your ovaries will continue to release eggs during ovulation.

What will you notice? Well, there’s a few symptoms that could start to present to indicate the beginning of perimenopause. Keep an eye out for:
• Irregular period
• Hot flashes/night sweats
• Changes in sleep (difficulty falling/staying asleep)
• Mood changes – increased anxiety, irritability, mood swings
• Decreased libido
• Brain fog
Although these are the common symptoms, you may experience some, but not others.

Changes to your lifestyle can help manage the symptoms of perimenopause. You could try:
• Exercising regularly
• Maintain a healthy diet
• Limit alcohol and caffeine
• Quit smoking.
• Acupuncture

When should you seek medical advice?
• Heavy or frequent bleeding
• Intermenstrual bleeding or bleeding after sex
• Debilitating mood changes or depression
• Severe sleep disturbances
• Or when it’s all just feeling a little too much!!

Dr Anna and Dr Emily I are available to discuss stage and help you understand what’s happening and to assist in managing your symptoms.

The management of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) varies from person to person. It is important to look at individual symptoms, reducing risk of long-term health issues and addressing your emotional well-being.
Alterations to lifestyle like regular exercise and a balanced diet can make a huge difference in symptom management. There are also medications which can help to regulate your cycle, improve insulin sensitivity and control acne. There are also treatments available for excess hair growth and to help with fertility.
Also, remember to check in with your mental health as well. When you have a number of symptoms affecting your physical health, it can sometimes affect your emotional and mental health. If you are not feeling like your normal self, a discussion with someone you trust or your GP could do the world of good.
