How do massage therapy and exercise come hand in hand? 👉

I do get ask this question often from clients. The goal with massage therapy is to de-stress your body, making the muscles feel good and your mind. Exercise plays an important role in this by being able to perform at your best (especially if you compete in a sport). 💪

Massage therapy can be used as a pre-exercise assistant by allowing better flexibility, reduced muscle tension and an increase in circulation. It can also be used as a post-exercise assistant by setting the body up for recovery, flushing toxins out and eliminating the build-up of lactic acid in your muscles. 🏋

If you find you're someone who exercises often and you experience a lot of fatigue and pain this can set you up for an underwhelming performance in your session. Massage therapy can be the key to helping you get back on track. 🔥

I always say a great training program should always be supplemented by a great recovery program. 🙌

Ever heard of the IT band (iliotibial tract band) before? 🤔

On the outside of your thigh is a thick band which starts at the origin of your hip and extends down towards the patella of the knee. This band (fascia) is responsible for assisting with movements such as hip abduction (moving away from your body), extension and rotation of the hip joint. 🏋

The main function of our IT band is to stabilise our pelvis and to aid in keeping our bodies posture erect. 🙌

You might have noticed when stretching, foam rolling or getting a message this area on the outside of your thigh gets very sensitive. It does its fair share of work for the body. Keep in mind if you're very active this will cause strain and stress over time, this is where you need to focus on recovery. A great place to start is being mindful of your posture. 💪

A great recovery routine always keeps the injuries at bay. It pays to be consistent. 😁

This time we are checking out the "PECTORAL" muscles of the body. These are the muscles associated with your chest area. 💪

These muscles are responsible for moving your upper body in a wide range of motions. Movements for this muscle can include flexion, adduction, internal rotation and stabilisation. 🏋️‍♀️

The pec major covers the majority of your chest area, whilst the pec minor is located beneath this. The serratus anterior muscles are located within the rib cage region. 🙌

Focusing on strengthening these muscles will benefit your posture, strength and stabilisation. You will find that they also need to time to recover, this is where massage therapy, stretching and other therapies like the cold water therapy can come into action. Like all other muscles in the body, they can be worked hard but they also need some TLC. 🔥

Foam rolling the quadricep muscles. 💪

Looking to add that extra bit to your next warm-up or your recovery routine? look no further than this exercise with the foam roller. 🔥

A great routine with this exercise for a warm up or recovery routine can inlcude doing:

🔹Rolling back and forth for 10 reps (from just above the knee to the top of the quad below the groin)
🔹Hold on the sore spot (for me it is mainly around the mid quad) for 10 seconds.
🔹Repeat this for 5 sets in total. It should take you close to 2 mins to do.

Let's take a peek at the group of muscles that make up your "ADDUCTOR" region.

Firstly, the ADDUCTORS are located in the inner part of your thigh. There are 5 muscles in total being split into 2 different groups. The first group being the "long adductors" are the Gracilis and Adductor Magnus which attach at the pelvis and extend to the knee. The second group being the "short adductors" are Pectineus, Adductor Brevis and Adductor Longus. These muscles attach at the pelvis and extend to your thigh bone. 💪

The adductor muscles are responsible for leg stability, balance, movement and strength. They do pack quite a punch and do a lot more than what you think. Like any other muscle it is important to strengthen the adductors to prevent any future injury.

Symptoms you may experience if your adductors are tight/sore etc. can include:
🔹groin strain
🔹hip instability
🔹joint pain (i.e. knees)

Massage Therapy and its benefits for YOUR recovery. 🔥

Massage therapy is often seen as a "luxury" service meaning people will usually get a treatment every so often and not consistently. It is a "maintenance" servicing of your body bringing everything back into alignment, ready to keep going. A bit like getting your car serviced and preventing it from having any future issues. 🙌

Massage therapy as a form of recovery can provide so many benefits for the body and mind including:
🔹Reduced stress levels (better mental clarity)
🔹Decrease in muscle fatigue
🔹Increase in muscle stimulation
🔹Overall your body will feel less fatigue leading to a better night's sleep, more energy throughout the day and the momentum to MOVE your body.

The majority of my clients are on a 2-week schedule meaning every 2 weeks they're getting a treatment. This is what maintenance is all about, looking after yourself, preventing any future injury and keeping on top of things. 💪

COLD WATER THERAPY is often talked about as a form of recovery. This is a controversial topic because there can be pros and cons to this type of therapy. I personally believe that it comes down to the individual and what they experience. YOU NEVER KNOW UNTIL YOU TRY. 🙌

For myself i have been experimenting with cold water therapy on and off up until recently were i started to implement it again into my morning routine. In the couple of weeks i have been doing it, a couple of the biggest benefits i have experienced have been:

🔹Increased alertness and less mental fatigue
🔹reduced inflammation, less soreness and improved range of motion with my body
🔹My skin has thanked me by becoming more radiant and healthier looking

This is what i have experienced in the short time i have been doing cold water therapy. I find it is an effective way to recover. But always do your research and find out if this is good for you of course. I was experiencing a lot of morning fatigue myself, which lead to an array of symptoms that i was experiencing (stress, fatigue, anxiety etc.) I will continue with this method of recovery as it is in my morning routine and to experience the benefits i have come across is a WIN for me. 💧

This week we reflect on the RHOMBOID muscle group. 💪

The rhomboids are the set of muscles that span around your shoulder blade region. There are two main muscles in this group, one being the "minor" and the other being the "Major".

The main purpose of the rhomboid muscles is to retract and rotate the scapula. They also help to stabilise the shoulders and work in harmony with other muscle groups like the traps and lats.

Over time fatigue of the muscle will occur from overuse, stress and posture. Foam rolling and massage therapy is a great way to ease the tension and stimulate the muscle helping with increased blood flow.
