New Zealand UFC fighter Carlos Ulberg🥊 secured a first-round yesterday, despite suffering what appears to be an ACL injury mid-fight.

In the opening 5 minutes, Ulberg landed awkwardly while attempting to push explosively off his back leg. Footage shows forward translation of the tibia followed by a recoil as it shifts back into place. In most cases this type of non-contact injury, often occurring during rapid deceleration, pivoting, or change of direction, results in immediate pain, instability, and an inability to continue. However, within 10 seconds of the injury, Ulberg proceeds to deliver a knock-out blow.

Management will likely include ACL reconstruction surgery, followed by 9-12 months of intense rehabilitation. Following surgery, early-stage rehab will focus on restoring range of motion and lower limb strength. This progresses to neuromuscular control and a graded return to running, change of direction and plyometric training. For return to play, UFC fighters will have a focus on quick change of direction, bounding and jumping to account for explosive striking and high impact movements performed under fatigue.

Over the past couple of weeks, Jon has been guiding the team through the complexities of elbow management. The inservices covered a range of assessment and treatment techniques, including the unique Overhead Motion Protocol for elbow dislocations.

The team also trialled different types of braces and strapping techniques, with a strong focus on conservative management.

A fantastic opportunity for the team to build practical skills and continue delivering evidence-informed care.

🚨 INJURY MASTERS 🚨

Reports are emerging that Donald Trump has presented with a high-grade overuse injury of the dominant thumb, following a sustained period of extreme social media output.

The mechanism is believed to involve rapid, repetitive posting, aggressive scrolling, and forceful screen interaction well beyond typical load tolerance. Symptoms include pain, reduced posting capacity, and loss of fine motor control during high-pressure online engagement.

Management will include:
• Decreasing outlandish claims on social media
• Discussing content prior to posting
• Reducing application of fake tan
• Progressive thumb loading and controlled return to posting (if at all)

Long-term goals include a sustained reduction in overall social media output, expected to improve both tissue capacity and broader public stress levels.

The plan has already been given the “thumbs up” by the general public. 👍

Happy April fools day everybody

23/03/2026

Parramatta Eels lock and Origin hopeful J’maine Hopgood 🏉 suffered an ACL injury over the weekend from a hip drop tackle, which is likely to sideline him for the remainder of the NRL season.
ACL injuries commonly occur during sudden changes of direction, pivoting movements, or when the knee is forced into an awkward position during contact. The ACL is a key stabilising ligament in the knee, helping control rotation and forward movement of the shin bone. When it ruptures, athletes often experience immediate pain, swelling and instability through the joint.
Rehabilitation following ACL injury is a long but structured process. Early physiotherapy focuses on reducing swelling, restoring knee range of motion, and rebuilding quadriceps strength. As recovery progresses, athletes work through progressive strength training, running drills and eventually sport-specific movements.
Return to play after an ACL reconstruction typically takes around 9–12 months for elite athletes, depending on how well the knee regains strength, stability and confidence under load.
With modern rehabilitation programs and high-performance medical support, many professional athletes are able to successfully return to their previous level of performance. 💪

This week our physios took part in an in-service led by our physio Zac and VALD representative Isaac, exploring new features of our VALD ForceDecks. The session also looked at how we can use the system for group testing and deeper movement analysis.

The data collected through this technology allows us to objectively track progress over time, helping demonstrate improvement during rehabilitation and identify areas that still need work following injury.

Regular in-services like this help our physios stay up to date with new technology, continue developing their clinical skills, and ensure we are providing the best possible care for our patients.

Rory McIlroy 🏌️‍♂️has withdrawn from the Arnold Palmer invitational over the weekend due to back pain.
He is hoping to recover in time to defend his 2025 victory at Augusta National next month.
Elite golfers retire excellent mobility to allow them to achieve good rotation with the speed, power and precision that allows them to get the ball on the green. ⛳️
Modern golfers spend a lot more time in the gym training strength and mobility.
Physiotherapy treatment would likely include techniques aimed at settling pain and spasm, and restoring muscle tone.
Mobilisations through the hips and rib cage would also be beneficial to allow rotation forces to be evenly distributed.
Rory would likely continue training his golf swing on simulator- focusing in accuracy and technique with shorter/easier strokes. Too much rest can make it harder to return quickly.
