Summer head cold? So annoying. 🤧

You know the feeling — hot and cold at the same time, headache creeping in, muscles aching, nose completely blocked. And it’s summer – you want to be outside enjoying the warmth, not inside in bed!!

In Chinese medicine, this pattern is often diagnosed as Wind-Cold and one of our favourite classic formulas for early-stage head colds is Gui Zhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction).

Used since the Han Dynasty, it’s sometimes called the “first of all prescriptions” because of how beautifully it harmonises the body.

✨ Cinnamon twig & fresh ginger help release the pathogen
✨ White peony nourishes and eases muscle tension
✨ Red dates nourish the body
✨ Licorice harmonises the whole formula

It’s simple, balanced, and incredibly effective — when prescribed correctly.

⚠️ Not suitable if you have strong heat signs like a burning throat, high fever, or yellow phlegm.
Please consult a qualified Chinese herbal medicine practitioner before taking any Chinese herbs.

If you feel a head cold coming on, early treatment may makes all the difference.

🐎🔥 Chinese New Year 2026 – The Year of the Yang Fire Horse
Welcome to a year of passion, movement and powerful energy.

In Chinese astrology, the Horse symbolises freedom and strength. Add the Fire element, and we get a double Yang year – full of warmth, creativity and momentum.

In TCM, Fire relates to the Heart and Spirit (Shen) 💓.
Balanced Fire = a clear mind, good circulation, emotional stability.
Excess Fire = anxiety, insomnia, inflammation and overwhelm.

This year, the key is nourishing your Yin to stay grounded.
Try to:
✨ Go to bed earlier and rest deeply
✨ Eat well and avoid too much sugar
✨ Slow down – don’t rush everything
✨ Make space for stillness and calm

At East Melbourne Acupuncture, we’re excited to support your health through this high-energy year by helping restore Yin/Yang balance and calming the nervous system.

Wishing you health, happiness and prosperity for 2026 .

Controversial things we do (sometimes) as TCM Practitioner’s:
- eat bananas
- drink coffee
- have cold drinks with ice
- run

You may have heard these are a no no in Chinese Medicine but we’re here to remind you that it’s all about balance! Especially in the warmer months.

Most of us come out of our degrees thinking you can eat banana’s but they’re an incredibly healthy fruit that should be enjoyed, unless you have ALOT of damp (imagine thick white tongue coat and carries a lot of water weight), then perhaps you need to not go overboard.

Coffee, well… why not if it’s something that brings you joy! Unless you are TTC, stick
to your one cup a day 😉.

Yes, we have one small ice drink sometimes for example but then drink room temp water for the rest of the day. But if you’re having ice water all day in winter, then we may have a slight problem.

And running, it’s not for everyone but it’s totally ok if it’s something you enjoy and you don’t feel tired afterwards. Again, just don’t go overboard and hydrate well afterwards.

We’re here for realistic dietary and lifestyle advice not black and white rules

If you in doubt, just ask us below 👇🏻

🌺 Dan Shen (Red Sage) | Chinese Herbal Medicine

Dan Shen, also known as Red Sage (Salvia miltiorrhiza), is one of the most important herbs used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for circulation, inflammation, emotional health and women’s health.

Although you’ll see the beautiful red sage flowers around Melbourne, it’s the root that is used in Chinese herbal medicine.

Traditionally, Dan Shen is prescribed to:
❤️ Improve blood circulation & relieve pain
🔥 Reduce inflammation & heat in the body
🧠 Calm the mind and ease irritability
🌸 Widely used for period pain & gynaecological conditions
💓 Support sleep and palpitations

It’s commonly used in clinical practice for joint pain, stress, insomnia, migraines, inflammatory conditions and emotional imbalance.

Modern research is now exploring Dan Shen for its role in cardiovascular disease, liver health, cancer and neurological disorders.
Looks like the ancient herbalists knew a thing or two 😉

🎄✨ Festive Season Wishes from East Melbourne Acupuncture ✨🎄
From all the team at EMA, we’d like to wish you a safe and happy festive season.

Thank you to our wonderful patients for your ongoing support. We love using Chinese medicine to support all kinds of health concerns and hope we’ve helped you feel better along the way.

This time of year can be tough, and this year has been especially hard for many. We believe small gestures can make a difference — smile at people you pass on the street, slow down to let others through, or offer someone a compliment. Kindness and understanding go a long way 💛

We’ll be having a little break and limiting our opening hours over the next couple of weeks:
📅 Holiday Hours
• Christmas Eve: 8:30am – 3pm
• Christmas Day & Boxing Day: Closed
• Dec 27: 8:30am – 10:30am (early close so Clare can go to the cricket 😉)
• Dec 28–29: Closed
• Dec 30: 11am – 3pm
• New Year’s Eve & New Year’s Day: Closed
• Jan 2: Back to usual hours 🙂

Wishing you a joyful festive season and a gentle start to the New Year.
We can’t wait to see our old friends and new in 2026 🌿✨

Is Christmas stress getting the better of you? 😮‍💨🎄
Present shopping, food planning, and squeezing in catch-ups can leave your nervous system in overdrive.
Here’s a simple acupressure point you can try at home:

👉 LIV3 (Taichong / Great Rushing)
In Chinese medicine, the Liver is responsible for the smooth flow of Qi and emotional regulation. When stress builds up, Qi can become stuck - leading to anxiety, poor sleep, IBS, headaches, and body tension.

✨ In the clinic we often use LIV3 to :
✔ Calm stress and anxiety
✔ Improve sleep and mood
✔ Ease headaches and pain
✔ Clear the mind

If Christmas is feeling a bit too much, try gently massaging LIV3 for a few minutes to bring that heightened energy right down—or come and see us at East Melbourne Acupuncture for some much-needed relaxation and care.
🎁 Sometimes the best gift is giving yourself a moment to reset.

📣 New Research: Acupuncture & Dry Needling Show Benefits for Fibromyalgia
A high-quality systematic review has found that acupuncture and dry needling may support people living with fibromyalgia by:

• Reducing chronic pain and tender-point discomfort
• Improving sleep quality
• Lowering fatigue and brain fog
• Boosting overall wellbeing and quality of life

While results are strongest short-term, the findings highlight acupuncture and dry needling as effective complementary therapies for fibromyalgia symptoms.

At East Melbourne Acupuncture clinic, we provide personalised, evidence-guided acupuncture treatments for fibromyalgia to support the nervous system and reduce pain sensitivity.

✨ Yin vs Yang — What’s the Difference? ✨
You’ve probably seen the symbol… but what do yin and yang actually mean in Chinese medicine?

🌙 Yin = cool, calm, nourishing, grounding
Think of:
• Night-time
• The moon
• Rest, stillness, deep breathing
• Cooling foods like cucumber & watermelon
• Calm, restorative energy

☀️ Yang = warm, active, dynamic, energising
Think of:
• Daylight
• The sun
• Exercise & movement
• Warming foods like ginger & cinnamon
• Motivation, drive, outward energy

Your health thrives when yin and yang are in balance.
When one outweighs the other, you might feel symptoms like low energy, poor sleep, stress, heat sensitivity, cold limbs, or hormonal shifts.

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine help bring yin and yang back into harmony—so your body can function at its best 🤍
