Our fearless and tireless leader, Debbie has been in Malta this week for the 33rd IALP conference in her role as Chair of the Voice Committee.

But wait, that’s not even the exciting bit - Deb was awarded the title of Honoured Member of the IALP – a recognition of her decades of contribution, leadership and passion for voice around the world.

Such a huge honour and we could not be any prouder.

Still buzzing after an inspiring online PD with THE Dr Christine Sapienza – all the way from the USA. Still fangirling over this voice, swallow, and upper airway royalty.

Our VMA Connect Speechies were treated to a deep dive into EMST and IMST – from muscle physiology to research-led protocols, and all the juicy clinical questions like “who should (and shouldn’t) be using them?”

Deb wasted no time putting her new knowledge to work today… although judging by this photo, she may have generated so much expiratory pressure that something grew out of her ears. We’ll get back to you once we’ve ruled out spontaneous laryngeal sprouting

What. A. Weekend. The conference absolutely soared — a huge celebration of passion, skill, and the unstoppable drive of our singing teaching community.

From inspiring presenters to powerhouse workshops, every moment reminded us how special this community is.(Also… can we talk about the conference dinner? Pretty sure Australia’s best performers and next-level dance moves were all in that room)

We’re bursting with pride to celebrate our very own Nadine — not just a brilliant Speech Pathologist and VMA team member. but also the president of Her dedication, leadership and spark lit up the entire weekend.

Massive congrats to everyone involved. Singing teachers and voice nerds, you’ve outdone yourselves.

We’re feeling all the voice love at the Conference this weekend — and look who we bumped into… Connie! The absolute queen of singing teachers.

Connie has been championing healthy voice use since before it was cool — one of the earliest adopters of working alongside voice care teams to support singers across the lifespan. And yes… she also happened to be Meg’s childhood singing teacher Full circle moment!

So grateful for teachers like Connie and the many amazing practitioners around us this weekend who laid the foundation for evidence-based, collaborative care for performers. Here’s to strong, supported voices — on stage and off!

The World Health Organisation have championed the importance of rehabilitation after occupational voice injuries with this great story. It’s not just performers that are at risk but all who rely on their voice for their job & have a heavy vocal load with decreased recovery times. Vocal fatigue is normal but should not persist so do get your voice checked if you are worried as early detection is key!!

When Jayme-Lee Hanekom lost her voice, she feared she might lose her career, too. As a musical theatre performer, she had spent years dazzling audiences in productions like Frozen, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The Book of Mormon. But in April 2022, an unusual tickling sensation in her thro...
