September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month โค๏ธ๐Ÿฉธ and across Epworth, our team from the Epworth Centre for Immunotherapies and Snowdome Foundation Laboratories were busy highlighting awareness about blood cancer and the work being done to understand, treat and overcome it.

Since the Centre opened in 2021, our passionate team of haematologists, oncologists, and researchers have been researching treatments such as CAR T-cell therapy, to give our patients access to a range of life-changing clinical trials.

Stitching hearts and spreading kindness ๐Ÿ’›

Volunteers, consumer advisors and Epworth staff came together for a โ€œSip and Sewโ€ drop-in morning tea prior to Patient Experience Week. Together, they hand-stitched more than 200 felt pocket hearts โ€“ many continuing to sew even after they reached this remarkable number.

Each heart was gifted to a patient with a message: โ€œThis pocket heart has been lovingly handmade by our volunteers to share and spread kindness and care. Keep it close and give it a gentle squeeze whenever you need a reminder of love, hope, courage and comfort.โ€

Milestone moment at Epworth Geelong! ๐ŸŽ‰ Last month, our team performed the 1,000th robotic surgery using the Da Vinci surgical system.

Since its installation at our hospital in 2018, the Da Vinci robot has supported procedures across general surgery, gynaecology and urology; helping deliver advanced, minimally invasive care to our patients.

The milestone case, a prostatectomy, was performed by urologist Mr Paul Kearns. A special morning tea was held to celebrate this achievement - congratulations to our Epworth Geelong team! ๐Ÿ‘

Flashing lights and sirens brought excitement to our paediatric patients, their families and our nurses at Epworth Richmond last week ๐Ÿšจ

Guest appearances by Victoria Police and Fire Rescue Victoria provided some of our young patients and their families a chance to take a break from their hospital room and enjoy a fun distraction during their stay.

The visit was part of our annual Paediatric Appreciation Week, which also included โ€œfun scrubโ€ days, pyjama day, a visit from Starlight Captains, and a therapy dog visit.

We are proud to celebrate the dedication and compassion of our incredible Epworth Richmond paediatric team.

๐Ÿ’™ Patient Experience Week is a reminder that every conversation, every action and every act of care matters.

In every moment of care, we can make a difference to our patients and their families.

๐ŸŽ‰ Exciting news from Epworth Geelong!

Last week, we opened two brand-new operating theatres - adding 20 extra operating lists per week to meet the needs of our growing community. ๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿ’—

Theatres 10 and 11 are equipped with advanced surgical monitors and digital connectivity, boosting capacity across specialties including, neurosurgery, robotic surgery, orthopaedics, urology, gynaecology and general surgery.

โœจ Thanks to the generosity of our donors through Epworth Medical Foundation, we have redesigned the reception area and opened a new admission lounge to create a more welcoming experience for patients.

To further improve patient experience on the day of their surgery, Epworth Geelong has also streamlined the patient flow process from admission to theatre.

Celebrating research excellence at Epworth

Each August, Epworth Research Week spotlights the incredible work of our teams to ensure better health outcomes for our patients and community.

This year, we are proud to congratulate Adjunct Associate Professor Suzie Hooper, Director of Clinical Services, Continuing Care & Support Services, on receiving the Epworth Research Leader Award ๐Ÿ† for her outstanding leadership in rehabilitation and mental health research.

Suzie is a passionate advocate for nursing research, mentoring many other nurses to embrace evidence-based practice to help shape patient care at Epworth.

โ€œI was honoured to receive this award, which recognises my passion for fostering research and quality improvement among nurses and allied health staff,โ€ said Suzie.

๐Ÿ‘ Congratulations to Suzie, and to all Epworth researchers who are making a positive impact to patient care.

Single port robot an Australian-first at Epworth! ๐Ÿค–๐Ÿ‘

Epworth Richmond is the first hospital in Australia to introduce a new advanced robotic technology that can deliver complex surgery through just one tiny incision.

Where traditional robotic systems involve the surgeon controlling four robotic โ€˜armsโ€™, which enter the body through four incisions of around 8mm in diameter, the new da Vinci single port system requires just one incision of around 25mm in diameter.

Unlike traditional multi-port robotic procedures, this system allows instruments and the 3D telescope to enter the body straight - then expand like snakes once inside. ๐Ÿ

This unique flexibility creates the space needed for precision in complex procedures across urology, gynaecology, thoracic, cardiac, colorectal, and general surgery.

Crafty donation for Epworth patients! ๐Ÿงถ

The knitted cuffs feature ribbons, pom poms, zips and beads to provide visual, tactile and sensory stimulation for patients living with dementia.

Local volunteers have generously donated their time to hand-knit dozens of โ€˜twiddle cuffsโ€™ for patients with dementia, available across all Epworth hospitals. This week, the group handed over an incredible donation of almost 50 twiddle cuffs to Epworth Geelong.

โ€œFor patients living with dementia, arriving in hospital can feel overwhelming. Twiddle cuffs bring comfort and a sense of calm, helping soothe anxiety and provide gentle stimulation during their stay,โ€ said Kylie Semple, Epworth Volunteer Services Manager.
