Today we celebrate World Anaesthesia Day, honouring the incredible work of anaesthetists.

Anaesthetists play an essential role in healthcare, ensuring patient safety and comfort during procedures while expertly managing pain and critical care. Beyond their work in the theatre, anaesthetists are deeply involved in clinical teaching and contribute to research that drives innovation in patient care.

Thank you to all anaesthesia professionals for your dedication and compassion!

🌏 Happy World Sight Day! 👁️

We’re excited to announce that our eye drop instruction video is now available in multiple languages, making it easier for more people to learn how to use eye drops properly. Many people think they’re getting it right, but there’s often room for improvement.

The video provides clear, step-by-step visual guides to help you maximise the benefits of your treatment. Big thanks to the Western and Central Melbourne Integrated Cancer Service (WCMICS) Grants Program, Innovation and Improvements Stream 2024-25, for supporting the translation of these videos.

Working in the Emergency Department (ED) as a nurse is a demanding and deeply rewarding role. Each day brings its own rhythm, sometimes fast-paced, sometimes quietly complex, but always filled with opportunities to care, connect, and make a difference.

ED nurses are often the first point of contact for patients and families during moments of uncertainty and distress. Their ability to provide reassurance, deliver timely care, and maintain composure under pressure is vital to patient outcomes. They bring not only clinical expertise, but also the emotional intelligence needed to support people through some of their most vulnerable experiences.

Teamwork lies at the heart of ED nursing. Collaboration, mutual respect, and trust enable teams to navigate the unpredictable together. ED nurses remain highly attuned whether noticing a subtle change in a patient’s condition or offering quiet support to a colleague.

On ED Nurses Day, we recognise and thank our nurses for their professionalism, resilience, and unwavering commitment to safe, high-quality care. Your contribution is essential and deeply valued by those who need it most.

Last week marked a significant milestone for the Cochlear Australia and New Zealand Geelong Cochlear Care Centre (GCCC) as the team celebrated the 150th ‘switch on’ of a cochlear implant, with local recipient Jill at the centre of the festivities.

This achievement highlights the Centre’s vital role in supporting individuals with hearing loss throughout the Geelong region.

The GCCC was the first regional Cochlear Care Centre established in collaboration with The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital to provide comprehensive pre- and post-implantation care for adults and older children living in regional areas. Ensuring we are delivering the right care, in the right place at the right time.

This centre has greatly reduced the burden of travel for regional patients and their families.

Congratulations to Jill, the 150th recipient, and to the entire team at the Geelong Cochlear Care Centre on this important milestone!

Each year, we provide an update on our progress against our Reconciliation Action Plan both internally and externally. One important initiative making a real difference is our program where registrars provide care at the eye clinic we operate every fortnight in partnership with the Victorian Aboriginal Health Service (VAHS) in Fitzroy.

Over the past 2 years, 25 of our registrars have undertaken a rotation at the clinic. This provides much-needed eye care services to the community but importantly, offers our specialists a deeper cultural understanding of the unique needs of Aboriginal people.

The time spent at the clinic enables registrars to return to their communities with enriched knowledge and experience, creating a ripple effect that spreads awareness and expertise far and wide.

Senior Consultant Associate Professor Rosie Dawkins remarked, "It is essential for our eye care professionals to understand and respect the cultural contexts and health needs of the communities they serve."

Reflecting on her experience at the clinic, Registrar Dr Rukaiya Malik shared, "At the VAHS clinic, I witnessed the holistic care provided to patients and the community’s deep connection to family and culture. The experience offered a dynamic learning environment with contributions from doctors, Aboriginal Health Liaison Officers, and most importantly, the patients."

After Dr Louis Stephenson spent time at VAHS he said "My rotation at VAHS was a great opportunity to see how this excellent service runs. It is important ophthalmologists are aware of this service so it can be offered to patients, and since my rotation I have referred several patients from the Eye and Ear to have ongoing care at VAHS."
