Yoga, at its core, is a philosophy and psychology of living. This is the original intention of the practice of Yoga: it is meant to be a 24/7 transformation, or at least a continual transformation during your waking hours. These practices—especially breathing—can be done repeatedly, even briefly, whenever you can. Even watching your breath for 30 seconds is not worthless. We should not undervalue this.

This is the essence of putting Yoga into daily life. This is one of the most important skills—to inhabit and change your habits, make Yoga part of your daily life, and reduce the mental and situational barriers to practice.

Peace is not a place you arrive at, but a rhythm you return to, soft and sacred, beneath the chaos. It blooms in stillness, in breath, in the gentle art of surrender. You find it not by seeking, but by remembering who you are beneath the noise. In that remembering, in that quiet homecoming, you are whole.

In Ayurveda, the urge to breathe is considered one of the primary life urges. These urges (which also include hunger, thirst, urination, coughing, sneezing and so on) are essential for the normal functioning of a human system.

Suppression or increase of any of these urges beyond their natural boundaries can lead to disease. For example, if you have to run to catch a bus, your normal pattern of breath will become disturbed, since you must breath heavily in order to produce the energy needed to run. Thus, we should not attempt to control the breath immediately after running. We must allow the breathing to return to normal by its own accord.

Therefore, in the practice of pranayama, it is vital to know one’s own limitations, as well as knowing how to take intelligent, orderly steps in mastering the breath. This is why the ancient yoga texts say, on the one hand, that pranayama is the most powerful tool for destruction of all diseases; but on the other hand they also say that improper practice of pranayama can aggravate disease. This seeming contradiction arises because inappropriate breathing ratios and types of pranayama can disturb the flow of Prana in the person’s system.
