🎉🎉CELEBRATING DEDICATION AT RYDE HOSPITAL 🏆🏆

Ryde Hospital recently recognised decades of commitment and care at its Time in Service Awards.

The event honoured staff who have reached milestones of 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 years of service with the Northern Sydney Local Health District.

Forty staff members attended the ceremony, where they were presented with certificates, badges and a small token of appreciation. Those marking 30 years or more of service also received a commemorative pen in recognition of their longstanding contribution.

Among those recognised were four staff celebrating 40 years of service, including wardsperson Garry Simont, operating theatre nurses Judith Stuart and Deborah Simont, and Nurse Unit Manager Janelle Cahill.

Each were acknowledged for their outstanding contribution to Ryde Hospital and reputations for dedication, leadership and supporting both colleagues and patients over decades of service.

Staff celebrating 35 years included Emma Vartanians from the Integrated Booking Unit and social worker Rosaria Browne, both valued for their expertise, guidance and longstanding contributions to patient care.

Ryde Hospital General Manager Jennifer McConnell said the awards were an important opportunity to recognise the people behind the service. “Ryde Hospital is incredibly proud to celebrate the remarkable years of service demonstrated by our staff,” she said.

“Reaching milestones of 10, 20, even 40 years is no small feat – it reflects deep commitment, compassion and a genuine dedication to patient care.

“These individuals have shaped our hospital’s culture and supported generations of patients and colleagues. We thank them for their outstanding contribution and the lasting impact they continue to make every day.

“Congratulations to all recipients. Your service continues to make a lasting difference to patients, colleagues and the community.”

🌱🌿SEEDLING INITIATIVE RESTORES BLUE GUM HIGH FOREST 🌳💚

Staff, community members and partners came together at Ryde Hospital to plant native seedlings as part of the Adopt a Seedling initiative, supporting the ecological restoration of the nearby Blue Gum High Forest (BGHF).

The initiative was led by Health Infrastructure and supported through a donation of seedlings by the hospital’s redevelopment building contractor A W Edwards. Staff, community members and volunteers have been caring for the plants over many months.

Participants recently returned with their native Australian seedlings for a planting day at the blue gum forest. To date, 75,000 seedlings have been planted with many more to expected as the project progresses.

CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE IN OUR JUNIOR MEDICAL OFFICERS 👏

Ryde Hospital is proud to recognise the dedication and compassion of our junior doctors through the JMO Excellence Award, now in its second year.

Congratulations to Dr Eleni Gorgas, this year’s recipient, recognised by colleagues across nursing, allied health, medical and executive teams for her outstanding professionalism, kindness and strong work ethic.

Eleni is known for her patient-centred approach, reliability and willingness to step up when it matters most. From supporting her team during last-minute roster gaps to knitting a beanie for a patient celebrating a recovery milestone, she goes above and beyond to deliver truly compassionate care.

As Dr Linda Xu shared, Eleni embodies the very best qualities we value in our junior doctors.

A big congratulations also to the 15 shortlisted JMOs, each recognised for their valuable contributions to patient care and our hospital community 💙

🌈 REMINDER: Rainbow BreastScreen Clinic – Saturday 14 March

A mammogram can detect breast cancers too small to see or feel, sometimes as tiny as a grain of rice. Early detection saves lives.

BreastScreen NSW and Northern Sydney Local Health District are hosting a Rainbow Breast Screening Clinic in North Ryde this Saturday, offering a safe, welcoming and supportive space for LGBTIQ+ people with breast or chest tissue.

The clinic provides free mammograms with no referral required, delivered by staff trained in gender-affirming care. You’ll be asked your name and pronouns, your privacy will be respected, and you’re welcome to bring a support person if that helps you feel more comfortable.

Regular mammograms are recommended for LGBTIQ+ people aged 40 and over, including le****ns and bi women, intersex people, trans women who have used feminising hormones for five or more years, trans men who have not had chest surgery, and non-binary and gender diverse people.

️‍🏳️‍🌈 CLINIC SIXTEEN AT MARDI GRAS FAIR DAY

Staff from Clinic Sixteen, Northern Sydney Sexual Health Services (NSLHD) teamed up with Greater Western Sydney Sexual Health Services to host a stall at Mardi Gras Fair Day, connecting with the community and sharing information about sexual health, safe practices and inclusive care.

The team spoke with a wide range of people across the day, including LGBTQIA+ communities, young people and families, highlighting the sexual health services available across NSW.

“The day was a fantastic opportunity to strengthen visibility of sexual health services and reaffirm our commitment to equitable, non-judgemental care for all priority populations,” said Collins Adu, Health Promotion Officer (HIV and Sexual Health).

Staff also shared information about the upcoming Rainbow Breast Screening Clinic, delivered in collaboration with BreastScreen NSW.

😊 19,900 SMILES AND COUNTING 😊

A frightening night in emergency in 2015 has grown into a decade of comfort for thousands of local children.

In 2025 alone, North Shore Mums Smiles2U delivered 2,310 care bags to young patients across Royal North Shore, Hornsby, Ryde and Northern Beaches hospitals, bringing the organisation’s 10 year total to more than 19,900 bags distributed across 13 hospitals.

Founded by Michelle Key after her toddler son experienced a severe anaphylactic reaction, North Shore Mums Smiles2U was created from lived experience.

“My son was just 15 months old when we rushed to hospital in an ambulance,” Michelle said. “Trying to distract him while he was being treated was overwhelming. In that moment, I realised how much a small comfort item could help.”

Shortly after, Michelle began assembling care bags for children in hospital, initially delivering them to the emergency department at Royal North Shore Hospital.

“What started as a few bags quickly grew,” she said. “Staff could see the impact immediately. Children were calmer. Parents felt supported. It made a real difference.”

Today, Smiles2U works closely with nurses, social workers and child life therapists across NSLHD facilities and Northern Beaches
Hospital.
