World Hand Hygiene Day 2025 celebrated across NSLHD

NSLHD marked World Hand Hygiene Day with events across our hospitals and services, led by the infection prevention and control (IPAC) team.

This year’s theme, “It might be gloves. It’s always hand hygiene,” served as a strong reminder of the importance of good hand hygiene in all clinical settings.

Royal North Shore Hospital hosted skin hydration checks, games, and a special jingle performance by the RNSH Child Care Centre Choir. At Macquarie Hospital, staff enjoyed outdoor activities, coffee and doughnuts. Hornsby ran roving bingo and quizzes, and Ryde Hospital and Northern Beaches Community Mental Health Services also joined in with a range of engaging activities.

Clinical Nurse Consultant Mae Sia summed it up perfectly:
“Hand hygiene is one of the simplest yet most powerful precautions we can take to protect our patients, our colleagues, and ourselves.”

Thank you to our IPAC team, IPAC champions, sponsors and staff for bringing the message to life.

🌱 ADOPT-A-SEEDLING INITIATIVE UNDERWAY AT RYDE HOSPITAL 🌱

As part of the $526.8 million Ryde Hospital redevelopment, staff have been invited to take part in a unique Adopt-a-Seedling initiative.

Nearly 200 staff and community members have adopted native seedlings to nurture at home, with plans to replant them in the nearby Blue Gum High Forest.

The project supports local restoration efforts and is delivered in partnership with A W Edwards and Total Earth Care.

Ryde Hospital Acting General Manager Jennifer McConnell presented NSLHD Chief Executive Anthony Schembri with his own seedling during the launch.

“It’s a small act with a big impact—and a beautiful symbol of what can grow when people come together,” Anthony said.
