🧠 It's National Stroke Week | 4–10 August
Think F.A.S.T., act FAST.

A stroke is a medical emergency - every second counts. Use the F.A.S.T. test:

😶 Face: Check their face. Has their mouth drooped?
💪 Arms: Can they lift both arms?
🗣️ Speech: Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you?
⏰ Time: Time is critical. Call 000 immediately.

Other signs of stroke:
Facial weakness, arm weakness and difficulty with speech are the most common symptoms or signs of stroke, but they are not the only signs.

The following signs of stroke may occur alone or in combination:
- Weakness or numbness or paralysis of the face, arm or leg on either or both sides of the body
- Difficulty speaking or understanding
- Dizziness, loss of balance or an unexplained fall
- Loss of vision, sudden blurring or decreased vision in one or both eyes
- Headache, usually severe and abrupt onset or unexplained change in the pattern of headaches
- Difficulty swallowing

Sometimes the signs disappear within a short time, such as a few minutes. When this happens, it may be a transient ischaemic attack (TIA). After a TIA, your risk of stroke is higher. Stroke can lead to death or disability. A TIA is a warning that you may have a stroke and an opportunity to prevent this from happening.

Social Determinants of health are ultimately shaped by the distribution of money, power and resources at an international, national and local level.
At all levels of income, health and illness follow a social gradient: the lower the socioeconomic position, the worse the health. People who have limited access to quality housing, education, social protection and job opportunities have a higher risk of illness and death. Research shows that these social determinants can outweigh genetic influences or healthcare access in terms of influencing health.
Addressing the social determinants of health equity is fundamental for improving health and reducing longstanding inequities in health. It requires action by all parts of government, the private sector and civil society.

Why is it important for Eaton Community Pharmacy? Understanding and addressing SDOH is crucial for improving health equity and reducing health disparities. By addressing the root causes of poor health, we can create healthier communities and improve the overall well-being of individuals. 👩‍⚕️📝💊

Did you know your health isn't just about genetics or personal choices? It's also shaped by the conditions where you live, work, and grow up.

“Social determinants of health are the conditions in which people are born, grow up, live, work and age. These conditions influence a person’s opportunity to be healthy, his/her risk of illness and life expectancy. Social inequities in health – the unfair and avoidable differences in health status across groups in society – are those that result from the uneven distribution of social determinants.”

Next week we look at the Social determinants of health (SDOH) together.
